The Tribe of William & Mary used a three-run eighth inning to edge the Liberty Flames, 10-9, Tuesday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.
The Flames drop to 5-8 on the year, while the Tribe moves to 3-11. The win snaps a six-game losing skid for William & Mary.
The Tribe and Flames exchanged two-run frames in the game's opening inning. With runners on first and second with one out, left fielder Ryan Williams singled through the left side of the infield in the top of the inning to give the visiting Tribe a 1-0 lead. Two batter later, third baseman Ryan Lindemuth sent a two-out, run-scoring single back through the middle, staking William & Mary to a 2-0 advantage.
Liberty countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Center fielder Ian Parmley reached on a led off bunt single and shortstop Matt Williams doubled to move the Flames into scoring position at second and third base. Parmley then scored the first Liberty run of the afternoon, when the next batter, third baseman Tyler Bream, lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. After left fielder Doug Bream was hit by a pitch, designated hitter Justin Sizemore lined a single to center field to plate Williams, knotting the score at 2-2.
After the Tribe went back into the lead with a run on a RBI single by designated hitter Jonathan Slattery, they extended their advantage to two more runs in the third inning. Lindemuth reached on a throwing error by Liberty shortstop Matt Williams and moved to second on a single by right fielder Jackson Shaver with one out. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move into scoring position and Lindemuth made it, 4-2 William & Mary, by scoring on a ground out by catcher Devin White. Shaver followed with the second run of the inning for a 5-2 visitor's lead, as second baseman Kevin Nutter beat out an infield single.
In the bottom of the third inning, Liberty sent all nine men to the plate, scoring four runs on five hits and an error to take its first lead of the contest. The first three batters of the inning, Matt Williams, Tyler Bream and Doug Bream all reached to load the bases. Two batters later, Michael Robertson brought home Williams with a single. Tyler Bream then scored on a fielder's choice grounder by catcher Casey Rasmus. First baseman Austin Taylor and second baseman Zack Haley followed with RBI singles, putting the host Flames on top, 6-5.
For the second time in the contest, William & Mary and Liberty exchanged two-run frames in the fourth. A RBI double by Ryan Williams and a RBI single by Lindemuth to temporarily put the Tribe back in front, 7-6, in the top of the inning.
The Flames answered in the bottom of the inning. With one away, Doug Bream laced a double down the left field line to cash in Matt Williams, who had led off the home half of the fourth with a single, tying the game at 7-7. Sizemore followed with a run-scoring single to left field, giving Liberty its second lead of the game at 8-7.
After two scoreless innings, the Flames added a single run in the seventh. Taylor led off the inning by lacing an opposite field double and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Haley. The next batter, Parmley, singled to bring home the Liberty first baseman, extending the Flame advantage to 9-7.
William & Mary struck for three runs in the eighth inning, grabbing a 10-9 lead, it would never relinquish. Designated hitter Jonathan Slattery doubled and Ryan Williams reached on a fielding error by Flame second baseman Haley. First baseman Tadd Bower followed with a run-producing single, cutting the Tribe deficit to one at 9-8. The next batter, Lindemuth, reached on a bunt, pushing across Ryan Williams and knotting the contest at 9-9. Pinch hitter Sean Aiken made it three-consecutive hits, doubling into the right field corner to put the Tribe in front, 10-9.
Liberty put a runner on in the eighth against reliever Brett Koeheler, but was retired in order by the sophomore right-hander in the ninth to secure the road win for the Tribe.
Steven Evans, the fourth of five hurlers to take the mound for the Flames, drops to 0-3 on the season. The left-hander yielded one run on three hits in one inning of relief. He struck out one and walked two batters.
Koehler moves to 1-2 on the year. The last of three Tribe pitchers, Koehler, gave up one run on two hits over 3 1/3 innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Liberty had 15 hits in the contest. Matt Williams and Taylor had three hits apiece to lead the Flames. William & Mary collected 17 hits in contest. Slattery was 4-for-4 to pace the Tribe, while teammates Ryan Williams and Lindemuth had three each.
Liberty travels to Greenville, N.C., for the weekend Keith LeClair Tournament at East Carolina University. The Flames will open the tournament Friday afternoon against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. First pitch at Clark-LeClair Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
