
Liberty Powers Past George Mason, 16-7

The Liberty Flames plated five runs in both the second and the fourth innings, en route to a 16-7 victory over the George Mason Patriots in a non-conference contest, Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
With their fourth-straight win and eighth in their last nine contests, Liberty moves to 33-12 on the season. George Mason falls to 27-16 on the year. The Patriots have loss four-straight contests.
Liberty had its first five-run frame in the second inning. Shortstop Matt Williams was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to third on a single to second baseman P.J. Jimenez. After catcher Nathan Thompson walked to load the bases, right fielder Michael Robertson ripped a single into left field, scoring Williams with the first run of the game.
The next two Flame hitters, left fielder Kenneth Negron and center fielder Curran Redal, each plated a run with sacrifice flies for a 3-0 edge. After first baseman Doug Bream walked, third baseman Tyler Bream lined a two-out double into the left-center field gap, chasing home Robertston. On the double, Doug Bream moved to third and scored, when left fielder Nick Allen's throw sailed into the George Mason dugout for a 5-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, the Patriots loaded the bases with one. However, Flames pitcher Keegan Linza was able to induce a ground ball double play to end the threat from second baseman Chris Cook.
Liberty extended its advantage in the third. With one out, Jimenez beat out slow roller to third base for an infield hit. Thompson followed by a lacing a double inside the left field line and into the corner to chase home Jimenez for a 6-0 lead. Two batters later, Negron ripped a single back through the middle to cash in Thompson, upping the Flames' advantage to 7-0.
George Mason got on the scoreboard in the bottom frame. Stringing together four-straight hits to open the home half of the third, the Patriots scored their first two runs of the contest. Allen led off with single and moved to third on a double off the left field wall by center fielder Jeremy Haas. Shortstop Brig Tison and third baseman Mark Hill followed with back-to-back singles, making it, 7-2. Later in the inning, right fielder Dan Schafferman lifted a RBI sacrifice, cutting Liberty's lead to 7-3.
The Flames answered with five more runs in the fourth, batting around for the second time in the contest. With two outs and the bases loaded, Robertson doubled off the top of the left field wall to bring home two runs. Two batters later, Redal walked with the bases full to force in a run for a 10-3 advantage. Doug Bream followed with a two-run single, making it 12-3 in favor of Liberty.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots once again sliced into the Flames' advantage. With two out and a runner on second base, Schafferman singled to score the first run of the stanza. After a single by catcher Josh Steinberg to keep the inning alive, Cook grounded a RBI single through the right side of the infield to make it, 12-5.
Liberty added runs in the seventh and eighth. With Redal aboard in the seventh, Trey Wimmer, who took over at first base in the sixth inning, belted his third home run of the season, giving the Flames a 14-5 lead. With Jimenez aboard in the eighth, Thompson hit his team-leading seventh home run of the year, a shot onto the hill outside the left field fence, to score its 16th run and secure the victory.
Linza runs his record to 8-0 on the year. The right-hander allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings. He struck out one and walked three. Carter Browning pitched the final four innings to record his second save of the year. The reliever gave up two runs on two hits, striking out four and walking one.
George Mason starter Kris Mengle takes the loss, dropping to 3-3 on the year. The first of six Patriot pitchers in the game, Mengle allowed five runs on four hits over two innings. He walked two batters.
Jimenez had three hits and scored four times to pace the Flames, who had 15 hits in the game. Thompson, Tyler Bream and Robertson had two hits each for Liberty. Haas and Allen had two hits apiece to lead George Mason.
Liberty returns home for a non-conference match-up tomorrow afternoon. The Flames will square-off with the Maryland Terrapins at Worthington Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
