Liberty, winners of four-straight contests, moves to 2-2 in the Big South and 17-8 overall. High Point falls to 3-4 in conference play and 16-11 overall.
Facing the fourth-best hitting team in the country, Teufel held the Panthers in check for most of the contest, running his record to 5-1 on the year. The senior scattered four runs on nine hits in the game. He struck out eight batters and walked two.
The Flames jumped on the scoreboard in the home half of the first inning. Center fielder Curran Redal and left fielder Austin Taylor walked. After a fielder's choice ground out moved Redal to third, catcher Nathan Thompson singled through the left side to plate the senior outfielder for a 1-0 Liberty advantage.
High Point countered with its first run of the game in the second inning. With runners on the corners and two out, shortstop Mike Mercurio singled up the middle, scoring center fielder Max Fulginitti and tying the contest at 1-1.
In the fourth inning, the Panthers pushed across two runs, both coming with two outs, to take a 3-1 advantage. With the bases loaded, designated hitter Pablo Rosario lined a ground-rule double over the right-center field wall, cashing in two runners to give High Point the lead.
Liberty took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, sending 11 men to the plate to score five runs on five hits and taking advantage of three Panther errors. With one out, the Flames loaded the bases as third baseman Tyler Bream and Thompson both singled and shortstop Matt Williams reached, when High Point first baseman Steve Antolik dropped a throw from third baseman Murray White IV on a grounder.
The next batter, second baseman P.J. Jimenez, plated the first run of the uprising with a RBI single. Left fielder Doug Bream followed with the big blow of inning, launching a first pitch, bases-loaded, double off the wall in right-center field, putting the Flames back into the lead at 5-3. Two batters later, first baseman Trey Wimmer ripped a RBI single up the middle of the infield for a 6-3 lead.
It was all Teufel needed, holding High Point without another run until the ninth. The Panthers plated a run in the inning on a RBI ground out by White IV for the final score of 6-4.
High Point pitcher Jamie Serber takes his first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 on the year. He gave up six runs, four earned, in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two batters and walked two.
Thompson had three hits to pace the Flames, with a RBI and a run scored. Three Panthers had two hits each in the contest.
High Point and Liberty will wrap-up their three-game conference series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Worthington Stadium. Game one gets underway at 1 p.m.
