The Liberty volleyball team started off the spring tournament season this weekend with a full day of volleyball at Sunday's VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Spring Fling. The Lady Flames battled against a wide variety of competition by taking on five different teams on Sunday, winning three sets.
The day started off with a long, back-and-forth contest against the tournament hosts, the VCU Rams. The Lady Flames were able to clinch a 30-28 win with the help of rising junior Claire Jacobsma and redshirt freshman middle blocker Kendle Rollins. Jacobsma contributed five kills and a .444 hitting percentage, while Rollins added three kills for a percentage of .500. Adding to the tally for the Lady Flames from the setter position was redshirt freshman Lauren Bosché, who added two kills for the Lady Flames.
After a 10-point victory over Hampton (25-15), the Lady Flames fell by a 25-18 margin to the neighboring Virginia Tech Hokies. The fourth set of the day proved to be another battle as the Lady Flames took on the Virginia Cavaliers. Liberty led the entire stanza until point 24, when the Cavs fought back and took the victory by two points, ending the set at 27-25.
Another close set followed, when the Lady Flames took on William & Mary and were narrowly defeated with a final score of 25-20. Despite a few tough losses, Liberty ended the day on a positive note by taking another comfortable set win from the Lady Pirates of Hampton, 25-11.
Other noteworthy players for the Lady Flames included the team's lone rising senior, Karyl Bacon. She tallied nine kills and 23 digs on the day, while fellow outside hitter Erica Manor, a redshirt freshman, also added nine kills and three blocks.
Rollins and rising sophomore Loren Thomas both closed out the tournament with nine kills and a team-high four blocks. Leading the Flames on defense was the libero, rising junior Kelly Haseman, with 26 digs overall.
Liberty will take a weekend off from competition, before heading to Blacksburg, Va., to take part in its second tournament of the spring, at Virginia Tech on April 10.
