Liberty went into the intermission deadlocked, 1-1, against preseason BIG EAST favorite Louisville, during Saturday evening's final match of the Cardinal Classic. However, the host Cardinals took the next two sets to wrap up a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22) victory at Cardinal Arena.
Despite Nicki Scripko's (Jr., OH/RS, Fayetteville, N.C.) second 20-kill performance of the day, the Lady Flames fall to 4-5. Meanwhile, the Cardinals bounce back from a loss to Toledo, improving their record to 6-3.
As a result of her proficient attacking numbers, Scripko was voted to the Cardinal Classic all-tournament team, along with setter Kallie Corbin (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.).
Louisville took control of set one with an early 9-1 surge. A Lola Arslanbekova kill capped off the run, lifting the Cardinals' lead to 11-4. Louisville maintained the advantage for the remainder of the stanza, wrapping up a 25-16 victory.
Scripko had three kills during the first set, but the Cardinals prevailed by hitting .400 and recording three blocks. Arslanbekova accounted for a set-high four kills, while teammate Amanda Simmons contributed to all three of her team's rejections.
The second set saw four lead changes and 11 ties, the last of which came at 17-17. Liberty then tallied eight of the set's final 13 points to record a 25-22 triumph. The Lady Flames' late run featured a pair of service aces and three more Scripko kills, enabling Liberty to level the match at 1-1.
Scripko totaled six kills during the second set, while sophomore Rebecca Warren (L/DS, Virginia Beach, Va.) came off the bench to serve up two aces. For the Cardinals, Arslanbekova equaled Scripko's output with six kills of her own.
Midway through the pivotal third set, the home team broke out of a 12-12 tie with successive kills by Justine Landi, Anastasia Artemeva and Arslanbekova. Louisville remained in front the rest of the way, and a Kimi Hohl kill sealed her team's 25-19 win.
Again paced by Arslanbekova's six kills, Louisville hit an impressive .517 during set three. Meanwhile, Chelaine McCarty (Sr., MB, Houston, Ala.) racked up a .714 attack percentage with five kills to spark the Lady Flames.
Looking to capture its sixth victory of the season, Louisville took a pair of six-point leads during the fourth set. However, Liberty came back to even things up at 19-19 and 20-20, with Scripko's kills tying the score on both occasions. Arslanbekova's 21st and final kill then initiated a 3-0 Cardinal burst, propelling Louisville to a 25-22 victory and a 3-1 match win.
Scripko paced all players with eight kills during the final stanza. However, her efforts were overcome by Arslanbekova's five kills and Lecia Brown's four blocks.
On the evening, Louisville finished with a .361 team attack percentage, the highest a team has hit versus the Lady Flames since Charlotte hit at a .415 clip on Oct. 24, 2006. The Cardinals also tallied 12 blocks for the match, to Liberty's five.
Scripko, who had only recorded two 20-kill performances in her career prior to Saturday, notched her second such effort of the day. After pounding down 23 kills versus Tennessee Tech, the junior had 20 more against Louisville. McCarty also reached double figures with 11 kills, to go along with a team-best three blocks.
Libero Kelly Haseman (So., Three Rivers, Mich.) came up with a team-leading 11 digs, while Corbin contributed 38 assists.
Arslanbekova led all players with her 21 kills for Louisville, while Lindsey Mango's 13 digs were also a match superlative. Cardinal setter Kimi Hohl posted 45 assists, and Brown helped out on seven blocks.
Liberty will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., next weekend (Sept. 18-19), for its final tournament before the start of conference play, the Black & Gold Challenge. The Lady Flames will face Appalachian State (3-6) in Friday's opening contest at Wake Forest's Reynolds Gym. Match time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
