After Liberty had tied the contest in the top of the fifth inning, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, en route to a 7-2 victory over the Flames, Sunday afternoon in Big South Conference baseball action at Charles Watson Stadium.
Liberty falls to 16-7 in Big South play and 29-17 overall. Coastal Carolina, which took all three games of the weekend series, moves to 15-5 in conference action and 36-13 overall.
The Chanticleers plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Rico Noel walked to lead off Coastal Carolina's first at bat of the game. Noel then moved to third base on two balks. Three batters later, third baseman Tyler Bortnick singled through the left side of the infield, the only hit for either team through the first three innings, scoring Noel for a 1-0 advantage.
The Flames' first hit of the contest tied the contest in the top of the fifth. With one out, left fielder Casey Brown (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) blasted a drive over the left field wall, knotting the contest at 1-1. The outfielder's four-bagger was his third of the year.
In the bottom of the inning, Coastal Carolina went back into the lead with four runs. Catcher Jose Iglesias reached on an infield single and second baseman Steve Davis walked to open the home half of the fifth. After a pitching change for Liberty, Noel laid down a bunt, which Flames reliever Carter Browning (Jr., RHP, Ada, Okla.) threw wide of first base, letting Iglesias score and putting the Chanticleers back on top, 2-1. After designated hitter Adam Rice walked to load the bases, first baseman David Anderson lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right field, allowing Davis to tag up at third and score the second Chanticleer run of the frame. Bortnick followed with a two-run double, giving Coastal Carolina a 5-1 lead.
Liberty cut into the Chanticleer advantage in the seventh. With one out, the Flames loaded the bases with three straight singles by designated hitter Zane Bator (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.), Casey
Brown and first baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C.). Kizuku Scott (Fr., Hampton, Va.), who entered the contest in the bottom of the fifth, then walked in his first plate appearance of the afternoon to plate Bator, trimming the Liberty deficit to 5-2. However, reliever Matt Rein was summoned from the Coastal Carolina bullpen and retired with next two Flames hitters to get out of the jam.
The Chanticleers added some insurance in the eighth. Bortnick reached on an infield single leading off the inning and came all the way around to score on a double into the right-center field gap by right fielder Daniel Bowman. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third base, left fielder Chance Gilmore had a RBI infield single against a drawn-in Liberty infield, extending the host's advantage to the final margin of 7-2.
Liberty starter Cody Brown (Sr., RHP, Cumming, Ga.) falls to 2-3 on the year. The right-hander gave up three runs on three hits over four innings. He walked three batters. Browning allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of relief. He struck out one and walked one. Andrew Wilson (Sr., RHP, Cary, N.C.) pitched the final two frames for the Flames. The right-hander yielded two runs on three hits, striking out four.
Coastal Carolina starter Anthony Meo moves to 6-2 on the season. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits over the first 6 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one. Rein earns his first save of the year, with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Casey Brown had three hits for Liberty. Bortnick had three hits for Coastal Carolina.
