Liberty drops to 16-6 in Big South play and 29-16 overall. Coastal Carolina, who has taken the first two games of the three-game series, moves to 14-5 in conference action and 35-13 overall.
The host Chanticleers jumped on the scoreboard in the third inning. After two Coastal Carolina batters drew walks, first baseman David Anderson hit a one-out, three-run home run to straight away center field for a 3-0 lead. The Coastal Carolina first baseman's round tripper was his 18th of the season.
In the sixth inning, the Chanticleers extended their advantage. Right fielder Dan Bowman and shortstop Tyler Motter reached on back-to-back singles to open the home half of the frame. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by the next hitter, catcher Jose Iglesias. Two batters later, a two-out single by second baseman Steve Davis plated Bowman for a 4-0 host edge.
Liberty broke through for a run in the ninth. With one out, right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) singled. Catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) followed with a double into the left-center field gap, moving pinch runner Casey Brown (Jr., OF, Bakersfield, Calif.) to third. Designated hitter Cody Brown (Sr., Cumming, Ga.) grounded out against Chanticleer reliever Bobby Gagg, scoring Casey Brown for the final of 4-1.
Liberty starter Shawn Teufel (Jr., LHP, Tequesta, Fla.) drops to 7-2, with his first setback in seven starts. The left-hander had won six consecutive starts coming into the contest. Teufel gave up four runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out nine batters and walked five. The junior ties a career-high with his nine strikeouts.
Coastal Carolina starter McCully, making his second start of the year, moves to 4-1 on the season. The Chanticleer right-hander allowed one run, on six hits over 8 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Gagg recorded the last two outs of the game to earn his first save of the year.
Liberty shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) and Bream had two hits each for the Flames. No Coastal Carolina hitter recorded more than one hit.
The Flames and Chanticleers will meet tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the three-game conference series at Charles Watson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
