Liberty drops to 16-5 in Big South Conference play and 29-15 overall. Coastal Carolina moves to 13-5 in conference action and 34-13.
Liberty jumped onto the scoreboard in the ESPNU-televised contest in its first at bat. Shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) and center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) opened the game with back-to-back singles. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving both runners up a base. And when Coastal Carolina pitcher Cody Wheeler's throw in an attempt to get Williams at third sailed wide, the Flames' shortstop came home with the first run of the contest and a 1-0 Liberty lead. The next batter, catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.), then bounced a single through the middle of the infield, scoring Redal for a 2-0 Flames advantage.
In the bottom of the opening inning, Coastal Carolina countered with a run. Center fielder Rico Noel led off the home half of the first with a single through the left side of the infield. After advancing to second on a balk, Noel moved to third base on ground out. The Chanticleer center fielder then scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1, Liberty after one inning of play.
The Flames added to their advantage in the third inning. With one out, designated hitter Cody Brown (Sr., Cumming, Ga.) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on an opposite field base hit to right field by third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.). After the second out of the frame, first baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C.) singled sharply to center field, plating Brown for a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth, Liberty extended its advantage with three two-out runs. With one out, Redal singled through the left side of the infield. After the second out of the inning had been recorded, Hollinger beat out a bunt down the third base line for a hit. Brown followed by lining a double off the top of the wall, chasing home both runners to up the Flames' edge to 5-1. Tyler Bream then singled to score Brown, giving Liberty a 6-1 lead.
Coastal Carolina pushed a solo run across in the bottom of the frame. Right fielder Dan Bowman reached on a muffed throw by Liberty first baseman Wimmer to open the Chanticleer fourth inning. Two batters later, left fielder Chance Gilmore walked, moving Bowman to second base. Catcher Jose Iglesias followed with a run-scoring single to right field, cutting the Flames' edge to 6-2.
In the fifth, the Chanticleers sliced into the Liberty lead with three runs. With two out and a runner on first, Flames shortstop Williams misplayed a grounder by Bowman for an error. Coastal Carolina shortstop Tyler Motter followed with a run-scoring double to the bottom of the left field wall. The next batter, Gilmore, then singled to center field, plating both Bowman and Motter, slashing the Liberty advantage to one, 6-5.
The Flames loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth. After the Chanticleers recorded the second out of the inning by forcing out a Liberty runner at home plate, Tyler Bream walked, bringing home a run for a 7-5 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Coastal Carolina took its first advantage of the contest. Third baseman Scott Woodward walked to open the frame and promptly stole second base. Noel dropped a double down the left field line, scoring Woodward with the first run of the stanza. After advancing to third on a bunt base hit by designated hitter Adam Rice, Noel scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at 7-7. Three batters later, Bowman brought home Rice with a two-out single, giving the Chanticleers an 8-7 lead.
Coastal Carolina upped its advantage to 9-7 in the seventh, as pinch hitter Steve Davis grounded into a double play with no one out and base runners at the corners.
In the eighth, Liberty threatened. With one out, Doug Bream legged out an infield single. Hollinger followed by tomahawking a high pitch into the left field corner for a double. However, Chanticleer reliever Bobby Gagg retired the next two Flame batters to get out of the inning without any runs scoring.
Coastal Carolina first baseman David Anderson added two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame, hitting a two-run home run, his 17th four-base hit of the season. Later in the inning, the Chanticleers added another run on a sacrifice fly for the final score of 13-7.
Carter Browning (Jr., RHP, Ada, Okla.), the second of five Liberty pitchers in the contest, takes the loss, evening his record at 1-1 on the year. The right-hander allowed two runs on two hits during two innings of work.
Matt Rein, the third of five Coastal Carolina hurlers on the night, records the win to move 4-0 on the year. The left-hander pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Hollinger led all players in the contest with three of the Flames' 11 hits in the contest. Redal and Williams added two hits each for Liberty. Four Chanticleers had two hits apiece, as Coastal Carolina totaled 13 hits in the game.
