The Lady Flames outhit the Lancers, six hits to five, but could not manage to score.
Longwood made a threat offensively in the first two innings, putting two runners on each time. But the Liberty defense stayed solid, causing Longwood to strand four base runners to get out of each inning unscathed.
The Lancers connected in the bottom of the third, putting all three runs on the board when
Maggie Margadonna busted a three-run shot over the left field fence, giving the Lancers a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Flames put a runner in scoring position during their next at-bat, when Amber DePasquale led off with single up the middle. After Beth Bennett fouled out, J'nae Jefferson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move DePasquale to second. But she could not advance, as Danielle Howard grounded out to end the half-inning.
Kelly Strickland recorded a one-out hit in the top of the fifth with an infield single, and pinch runner Meredith Baisden stole second. Kaylee West flied out to center field for the second out, and leadoff batter Cassie Hendrix was up next.
She slapped a short single to right field, and Longwood's Camille Ketsdever attempted to throw her out at first. Baisden, who had moved to third, made the attempt to score when first baseman Courtney Long bobbled the ball, but was thrown out at home on the play for the third out of the inning.
The Lancers tried to extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on first and third with one out. With pinch hitter Brittney Latka up to bat, pinch runner Brittany Matthews took too far of a lead, and after an exchange between Keely McMillon, Kelly Strickland, Jefferson and Bennett, Matthews was tagged out at home. Latka then struck out to end the inning, and the Lady Flames came up for their final opportunity.
With two outs, Strickland stepped up and blasted a double deep to right field, but the Lancers were able to force a ground out on the next play, ending the game, 3-0.
Hendrix, DePasquale and Strickland each recorded two hits for the Liberty.
The Lancers were led by Margadonna, who batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Briana Wells (15-14) picked up the win in the circle, giving up six hits and striking out one batter in the complete game appearance.
Tiffani Smith (7-10) took the loss, giving up five hits in 2.2 innings. Relief pitcher Sarah Ellis held the Lancers hitless for the remainder of the game, striking out three batters in 3.1 innings.
Longwood improves to 19-17 on the year, while Liberty drops to 15-28.
The two teams will meet again this afternoon for Game 2 of a doubleheader at Lancer Stadium.
