Liberty improves to 12-5 overall on the season. Lafayette drops to 7-7. With the victory, the Flames move to 9-1 at home this season.
After the start of the contest was delayed an hour due to rain, both teams plated runs in the first at bat. Lafayette got on the scoreboard in the top of the inning on first baseman Jeff Butler's fourth home run of the season. In the bottom of the frame, Liberty countered with a run of its own. Center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) singled, and later scored on a two-out single by left fielder Jeff Jefferson (So., Danville, Va.).
In the top of the second inning, the Leopards loaded the bases with no one outs against Flames starter Cody Brown (Sr., Cumming, Ga.). However, Brown was able to induce the next three batters to fly out, keeping visiting Lafayette from taking a lead in the contest.
In the bottom of the stanza, Liberty pushed across three runs to take a 4-1 advantage. With the bases loaded and two outs, right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) ripped an opposite field double into the left field corner, clearing the bases.
The Flames took advantage of two Leopards mistakes to stretch their lead in their next at bats. Catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) reached second base to open the Liberty third inning, when Leopard second baseman A.J. Pisarri dropped his pop fly. After an infield single by third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) moved Hollinger to third base, the Flames catcher tallied the first run of the stanza, coming home on a wild pitch.
Later in the inning, Liberty benefited from another Lafayette miscue to plate four runs with two outs. With runners at first and second base, Flames shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) singled to left field. And when Lafayette left fielder Alex Bechta left the grounder get past him, both Liberty runners came around to score for a 7-1 lead. The Flames tacked on two more in the frame on a RBI double by Redal and a run-scoring single by Doug Bream for a 9-1 advantage.
Hollinger made it, 10-1 in favor of Liberty in the fourth inning. The senior backstop connected for his team-leading fifth home run of the year, leading off the frame.
The Flames added runs in the seventh and the eighth frames. Casey Brown (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.), who entered the game as the right fielder in the top of the sixth inning, provided a RBI single in the seventh. In the eighth, catcher Nate Thompson (Jr., Stoneville, N.C.) hit his first home run of the season for the final margin of 12-1.
On a staff day, Chris McDougal (Fr., RHP, Poquoson, Va.), the second of four Liberty pitchers in the game, records his first collegiate victory to run his mark to 1-0 on the season. In two scoreless innings of work, the freshman hurler did not allow a hit.
Lafayette starter Corey Shea takes the loss to drop to 2-1 on the season. He was roughed up for 10 runs on 12 hits over six innings.
Williams paced the Flames with three hits, scoring twice. Teammate Doug Bream posted his fifth multi-RBI contest by driving in four runs.
Third baseman Justin Shephard had two of the three Leopard hits on the night.
Liberty moves back into Big South Conference play tomorrow night. The Flames travel to High Point, N.C., to begin a three-game weekend, conference series with the High Point Panthers. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m., on both Friday and Saturday evenings, while the series finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
