The Liberty offense woke up in the bottom of the second when Keely McMillon singled through the right side with one out. She was then forced out on a Danielle Howard ground ball to the shortstop. With two outs, Cassie Hendrix tapped a slow bouncer to the shortstop for a base hit, advancing Howard. But the Lady Flames could not score, as Howard was forced out at third when Kelly Strickland hit a grounder to shortstop.
The Lady Flames put a runner on again in the bottom of the third, when J'nae Jefferson ripped a two-out single up the middle. But the inning ended when Kaylee West flied out to center field.
The Wildcats made a threat in the top of the fourth, when Simone Ceasar bunted to third, and Jefferson lost her footing to give the Wildcats a base hit. But the Lady Flames defense answered with a 4-6-3 double play to end the half-inning.
Beth Bennett led off the bottom of the fourth with a double struck deep to left-center field, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by McMillon. Next up to bat was Hendrix, who walked, then stole second. But the Lady Flames could not put a run on the board, as Strickland struck out swinging for the third out.
Liberty kept at it, and was able to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
With one out, Amber DePasquale singled on a slow grounder to the shortstop, who had no play on the ball. She then advanced two bases when Jefferson doubled to left center. West grounded out to the shortstop, but gained an RBI as DePasquale crossed the plate to give the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless sixth, the Wildcats looked like they may extend the game, as Ceasar singled up the middle and Celsey Tafoya singled to right field to put runners on first and second with no outs and the No. 4 batter coming up to the plate. After a quick team meeting in the circle, Smith struck out Allison Garcia for the first out.
Sabrina Ferguson flied out to left center for the second out, and the game ended when Liz Parrish struck out swinging.
DePasquale batted 1-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Lady Flames, and West recorded the lone RBI of the game.
Ceasar led the Wildcats, batting 2-for-3.
Smith (4-6) picked up the win, giving up four hits and striking out nine batters in the complete game shutout.
Garcia (4-13) took the loss, scattering seven hits and striking out three in 6.0 innings of work.
The Lady Flames improve to 2-1 in the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament, and 7-14 overall, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 6-22.
The Lady Flames are back in action at 1 p.m., taking on No. 18 Texas A&M.
