Liberty junior outside hitter Nicki Scripko notched her 1,000th career kill versus Radford, Tuesday evening at the Vines Center. Her milestone helped the Lady Flames remain unbeaten in Big South play with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-12, 18-25, 25-20) triumph over the Highlanders.
Liberty, now 9-7 overall, remains tied with UNC Asheville atop the conference standings at 4-0. The Lady Flames also extended several streaks. They have won four straight matches overall, nine consecutive contests against conference foes, 16 straight tilts against Radford and 20 of their last 21 October matches.
Meanwhile, Radford is now 10-11 overall and 1-5 in the Big South, after losing its third match in a row.
Tuesday night's match marked the Lady Flames' second annual Dig Pink contest. Players, coaches, fans and match workers all donned pink articles of clothing in support of breast cancer awareness and research.
Scripko (Fayetteville, N.C.), who entered the evening 11 kills shy of 1,000, got more than halfway there during a lopsided first set. She contributed six kills, a service ace and a solo block, helping Liberty post a 25-15 victory. The Lady Flames hit .258 as a team during the opening stanza, as compared with the Highlanders' .057 attack percentage.
Liberty seized control of set two early on, racing out to a 12-2 advantage. Scripko put down five kills during the surge, including her 1,000th at 10-2. Redshirt senior Brittany Pacella (RS, Reading, Pa.) later sealed the Lady Flames' 25-12 victory, sending the home team into the intermission up, 2-0.
Scripko added six more kills during the second set, while Loren Thomas (Fr., MB, Ocoee, Fla.) hit .800 with four kills of her own. Defensively, Karyl Bacon (Jr., OH/DS, Temecula, Calif.) came up with seven of Liberty's 20 digs in the stanza. Again, Liberty enjoyed a lopsided attack percentage advantage, .364 to .026.
Aiming to close out a 3-0 sweep, Liberty took an early 9-6 advantage in the third stanza, on Chelaine McCarty's (Sr., MB, Houston, Ala.) third kill of the set. Four different Highlanders then contributed kills to an ensuing 11-2 run. Megan McWhorter's kill made it 18-11, Radford, and the red-clad visitors went on to claim a 25-18 win and extend the match.
McWhorter and Mariah Nussbaum evenly split eight kills for Radford in the third session. Their efforts helped cancel out those of McCarty, who hit .444 with five of the Lady Flames' 10 kills.
Both teams hit for their highest percentage of the evening during a competitive fourth set, with the Lady Flames posting a .432 attack percentage and the Highlanders following at .273. Liberty took the lead for good when a 5-0 burst turned a 6-6 deadlock into an 11-6 advantage. Kirstyn Sanders (R-Jr., RS/MB, Bear, Del.) initiated the run with a kill and then served for four straight markers, including an ace. On her milestone evening, Scripko finished the match off by scoring Liberty's final five points on kills. Her spike put an exclamation point on the Lady Flames' 25-20 triumph and 3-1 match win.
Liberty tallied 20 kills during the fourth set, including six apiece from outside hitters Scripko and Bacon. Setter Kallie Corbin (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) added 19 assists, while libero Kelly Haseman (So., Three Rivers, Mich.) notched 10 of her digs during the final set. For Radford, Caroline Ratterree hit .462 with a set-high seven kills, and Katelyn Meeks recorded a pair of service aces.
On the night, Liberty led the way in every statistical category, including attack percentage (.264-.113), aces (5-4), digs (63-52) and blocks (9-4).
Individually, Scripko led all players with 19 kills, boosting her career total to 1,008. She also completed her seventh double-double of the year with 10 digs, to go along with two aces and two solo blocks. Position mate Bacon narrowly missed out on a double-double herself, tallying nine kills and a season-best 17 digs.
McCarty, hitting over .500 against Radford during her career, continued to terrorize the Highlanders on Tuesday. She ended up with 13 kills on just 23 swings, hitting .522 for the match.
Corbin finished with a match-high 46 assists, four kills and seven digs.
On the opposite side of the net, Radford's setter Desiree Aramburu finished with a double-double (33 assists, 15 digs). Meeks also had 15 digs, to go along with three aces. McWhorter led Radford's balanced offense with nine kills.
