The Liberty volleyball team, which swept the last 11 Big South opponents it faced during the 2007 season, opened the 2008 conference season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) blanking of Charleston Southern, Friday evening at CSU Fieldhouse.
The Lady Flames, who have now won 36-straight sets versus Big South foes dating back to last season, improve to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in conference action. Meanwhile, homestanding Charleston Southern saw its six-match winning streak halted on Friday. The Lady Buccaneers fall to 9-7 overall and 0-1 in the Big South with the setback.
Liberty scored the first three points of the match, including one of Kallie Corbin's (Jr., S, Beaverton, Ore.) match-high three aces and Nicki Scripko's (So., OH/RS, Fayetteville, N.C.) team-best 13 kills. The Lady Flames never trailed during the opening set, although their hosts from Charleston Southern evened the score on five occasions. Liberty broke the final deadlock, 16-16, with three consecutive points. Scripko contributed a block assist and a kill to the quick burst. Chelaine McCarty (Jr., MB, Houston, Ala.) then wrapped up the Lady Flames' 25-23 victory with a kill.
