Crystal Carey, one of numerous Liberty volleyball alumni who have served as assistant coaches under Shane Pinder’s direction, is beginning her second season as the Lady Flames’ graduate assistant coach.
Carey made a successful debut in 2008, helping guide Liberty to a 25-9 record and its second Big South title in a row. She has now been a part of three of the Lady Flames’ five Big South championship-winning squads.
Carey played middle blocker for the Lady Flames from 1999 to 2002, helping Liberty claim Big South titles in both 1999 and 2001. While a student-athlete, Carey also served as co-president of Liberty’s S.A.A.C. group with Sam Gado.
A native of Jamaica, Va., Carey is returning to the Commonwealth after living and working in Colorado since her graduation from Liberty. Most recently, Carey served as an assistant volleyball coach at Colorado Christian University for four seasons (2004-07).
Carey began her coaching career at the helm of a home school team called the Denver Eagles and guided them to the 2003 Colorado state title. The Eagles also placed fifth at that year’s national home school tournament.
Carey owns one year of club volleyball coaching experience, as she coached Colorado Volleyball Company’s 17-under national team in 2004.
Carey graduated from Liberty in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in human services.
