LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty Flames men's basketball program and head coach Ritchie McKay have announced the addition of Matthew Shelton for the 2026-27 campaign.
Shelton is a 6-5 guard from Hillsboro, Va. who will be transferring from the University of Charleston (Division II).
"He's from a really good collegiate program. Matt's a great athlete who has really good range," McKay stated. "His quiet disposition and total investment in the team and its success is really going to help our room."
Shelton spent the past two seasons playing for the Charleston (W. Va.) Golden Eagles and head coach James Long. As a sophomore, Shelton appeared in 27 of 29 games, starting all 27. He averaged 12.4 points (No. 3 on team), 3.9 rebounds (No. 3 on team) and 1.1 assists per game. He shot 52.7 percent from the floor, 34 percent from three-point territory and 69.6 percent from the foul line. Shelton and the Golden Eagles finished the year with a 19-10 overall record and 14-6 Mountain East Conference mark while playing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He scored a career-high 30 points against Concord on Jan. 21.
As a freshman during the 2024-25 season, Shelton appeared in all 28 games with 24 starts. The guard averaged 10.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 0.9 spg while shooting 52.1 percent from the field, 32.4 percent from three and 76.4 percent from the free throw line. Shelton and Charleston finished the year with an 18-10 overall record and 14-6 league mark.
Shelton is the sixth commitment for the Flames in this year's transfer portal, along with brothers Cobi and Cooper Campbell (Troy), Dillon Claussen (Washburn), Sean Register Jr. (Eastern Florida State) and Osmar Garcia-Araujo (Anderson (SC)).
