LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty men's basketball program and head coach Ritchie McKay have announced the addition of Dillon Claussen for the 2026-27 academic year.
Claussen is a 6-8 forward from Omaha, Neb. who will be transferring from Washburn (Division II).
"I can't tell you enough how excited we are to have Dillon join our family. He comes from a fabulous collegiate program that's experienced a lot of success. He will make an immediate impact on our team," McKay stated. "Like a lot of our guys, he comes from a great family and has a really complete offensive game and a defense commitment."
Claussen spent the last two years at Division II Washburn University (Topeka, Kan.), appearing in 64 games with 29 starts. The forward averaged 11.3 ppg and 4.9 rpg in those two seasons while tallying 68 blocks (1.1 bpg) and 55 steals (0.9 spg). Claussen ranks third all-time in Washburn basketball history in career field goal percentage at 64.1 percent (263-of-410). He is a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Claussen enjoyed a breakout sophomore season for the Washburn Ichabods, who posted a 31-2 overall record, 18-1 conference mark and a No. 3 national ranking at the Division II level in the final poll of the season along with MIAA regular season and tournament titles. He led the Ichabods in scoring at 15.6 points per game while earning NABC All-District first team, All-MIAA first team and D2CCA second team accolades. Claussen ranked seventh nationally in field goal percentage (62.5) and led the MIAA in the category. The forward was second on the team in rebounding at 6.1 per game.
He was named to the 2026 Bevo Francis Top 25 Watch List, announced by Small College Basketball. The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA). Considerations are given to season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character and team achievements. This is an incredibly prestigious award, as this award will only be given to one player within Small College Basketball per season.
As a true freshman during the 2024-25 season, Claussen played in all 34 games, averaging 7.4 ppg and 3.9 spg. He shot 67.4 percent from the field, a Washburn freshman record for field goal percentage in a season.
Claussen is the third commitment for the Flames in this year's transfer portal, along with brothers Cobi and Cooper Campbell of Troy.
