AZUSA, Calif. – Liberty closed out its stay at the Bryan Clay Multis in style, Friday at Cougar Athletic Stadium. Patasha Bryan tallied 5,567 points to break a 21-year-old program record in the heptathlon, while Gabriel Willis (7,341) and Jake Nicholson (7,082) became the Flames' 18th and 19th decathletes ever to score over 7,000 points.
Women's Day 2 Recap
Bryan's point total of 5,567 took down the mark of 5,504 which had been owned by Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Danielle McNaney since the 2005 Penn Relays and placed eighth in Group A, the highest seeded among the four heptathlon sections. Bryan shattered her existing personal best of 5,378 points from the 2023 ASUN Championship.
The redshirt senior opened day two with an outdoor personal-best 18-6.5 long jump in round three, good for No. 4 all-time within a Liberty heptathlon.
After throwing the javelin 131-4, Bryan produced a personal-best and Liberty heptathlon record 2:14.05 800 to punctuate her record-breaking heptathlon. The Lady Flames' previous best time in a heptathlon 800 was Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Delethea Quarles' 2:15.22 effort from the 1989 Penn Relays.
The top heptathlon score by a CUSA athlete since 2017 will put Bryan in contention for her first trip to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Last season, the 24th and final heptathlete to qualify to Eugene scored 5,551 points. McNaney was the most recent Lady Flame to contest the heptathlon at the NCAA national meet, doing so as a senior in 2005.
Bryan has now been a part of two program records in 2026. She previously helped the Lady Flames post an indoor program standard in the women's 4 x 400 relay with their 3:37.45 effort at the CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 28.
Teammate Paige Greenhagel added 128 points to her previous heptathlon best, finishing with 4,697 points for eighth place in Group C. The junior recorded her best-ever marks within a heptathlon in each of her first two events on Friday, the long jump (18-5) and javelin (90-6).
Men's Day 2 Recap
Willis' big personal-best score of 7,341 points placed a close second in Group B and ranks the redshirt senior No. 10 all-time in one of Liberty's most successful events in program history. Eight of the nine athletes ranked ahead of Willis on the list are All-Americans, and he bumped 2009 NCAA national qualifier Daniel Newell out of the top 10.
Willis bookended Friday's competition with personal bests in the 110 hurdles (14.59) and 1,500 (4:55.08), giving him personal-best clockings in all four running events over the last two days. His hurdles mark is fifth fastest within a Liberty decathlon all-time.
Nicholson came in fifth in Group C with 7,082 points in the redshirt freshman's decathlon debut. He becomes the first Liberty freshman to score 7,000 since newly announced Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Brandon Hoskins in 2005.
On Friday, Nicholson matched his pole vault personal best of 14-5.25 and heaved the javelin a personal-best 185-7 to pace all Group C competitors.
Samuel O'Regan followed in ninth place in the Group C standings at 6,152 points, a new personal best by 121 tallies. His day two marks were highlighted by a personal-best 4:56.20 1,500 and a 14-5.25 pole vault clearance that matched his lifetime best.
