Long Runs 1:48.22 to Break Liberty 800 Record
4/18/2026 3:10:00 AM | Track and Field
AZUSA, Calif. – Michael Long's program-record 1:48.22 800 highlighted Liberty's successful Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Meanwhile, Allie Zealand's 2:04.17 effort in her outdoor season opener nearly eclipsed the Lady Flames' women's 800 standard.
Men's Day 2 Recap
Long's time of 1:48.22 earned a runner-up finish in his heat and dipped under teammate Brendan Pitcher's Liberty standard of 1:48.26 from The Hill City Twilight on May 3, 2024.
Long has now taken down the indoor and outdoor 800 records during his first year as a Flame. He lowered the indoor standard twice, including a 1:48.82 at the Brant Tolsma Elite Invitational Sponsored by Beynon and a 1:48.72 at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational.
The trio of Edwin Kiprop (season-best 14:12.30), Tristian Merchant (14:23.64) and Jack Cottrell raced in the day's 15th and final men's 5K heat, which crossed the finish line just before midnight local time. For Merchant, it marked his first outdoor 5K since the 2023 NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.
Women's Day 2 Recap
Zealand took to the track for the first time since placing fifth in the NCAA women's 3K final on March 14. The sophomore All-American showed no signs of rust, dropping a 2:04.17 800 to cut more than two seconds off her previous best.
Zealand now ranks No. 2 in program history after just missing Kate Goodyear's program standard of 2:03.99 from last season. Friday's time should be fast enough to qualify for the NCAA Division I East First Rounds meet, should Zealand choose to contest the 800 in Lexington next month.
Jessica Palisca (season-best 2:07.78) and Eden Alexander (outdoor personal-best 2:09.14) also ran well in the 800 on Friday.
Ava Gordon (personal-best 16:18.99) came in second overall out of 109 competitors during the four Open A sections of the women's 5K. She shaved seven seconds off her previous best, set at last year's Bryan Clay Invitational.
Ryann Aycock joined Liberty's all-time top 10 list at No. 9 with a 5K personal best of her own, 16:47.89. Katie Sigerud's 17:09.34 5K set an outdoor personal best.
