MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – When play resumed on Monday morning, the Flames were able to hold their position and will head into tomorrow's final round of the Michael C. Marino Classic with the tournament lead.
Due to the threat of severe weather in the area on Monday, tournament officials had the 16-team field play 27 holes on Sunday at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club (par 72, 7,233 yards).
The field was able to complete the final nine holes of the second round at the Coastal Carolina hosted tournament on Monday morning with Liberty sharing the lead with NC State.
Liberty (284-280) and NC State (284-280) posted matching team scores to hold a one-shot edge after 36 holes of play with a 12-under par 564.
No. 33 Louisville (282-283) and Charleston (289-276) share third place with an 11-under par 565, followed two shots behind by Coastal Carolina's 9-under par 567 (290-277).
Liberty's climb to the top of the leaderboard has been assisted by the strong play of Ike Joy and Michael Lugiano with both golfers holding down spots in the top 10 individual standings.
Joy is currently tied for fourth place with a 7-under par 137 (71-66). The graduate student signed for a 6-under par 66 on Monday, matching the second-lowest 18-hole total of his Liberty career.
Joy offset two bogeys during the second round with eight birdies, giving him 11 birdies during the first two rounds of the tournament.
Lugiano (71-68) is two shots back of Joy and shares eighth place with three other golfers in the 90-man field with a 5-under par 139.
The Flames will be in the lead group heading off the No. 1 tee (par 4, 425 yards), starting at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Liberty, who will be looking for its first team title since winning the 2024 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship, will be paired up with golfers from NC State and No. 33 Louisville.
