LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey's Josefina Tomasi and Mia Santana were each tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after their performances in home wins over No. 9 North Carolina and Georgetown.
Tomasi garners the distinction for a second straight week. The junior forward has been selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times this season, most on the squad, and five total times for her career. Meanwhile, Santana earns the first weekly award of her career.
Tomasi delivered in a big way for Liberty in two home triumphs this past weekend, scoring a pair of game-winning goals. In Sunday's signature 2-1 win over the UNC Tar Heels in Lynchburg, Liberty's first-ever home victory over UNC, she scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. Tomasi's goal was her seventh of the year, her third straight season reaching the seven-goal mark.
Tomasi and the Lady Flames overcame an early 2-0 deficit last Friday versus the Georgetown Hoyas, scoring four unanswered goals to prevail 4-2. Tomasi netted the go-ahead goal on a reverse into the left side of the cage in the 51st minute.
In 13 games this year (all starts), Tomasi is second on the team in both goals (7) and points (17) and paces the squad with three game-winning goals.
Santana, a sophomore midfielder, tallied a pair of assists in the two games and also played a pivotal role in Liberty shutting down a potent North Carolina offense. In Sunday's matchup against the Tar Heels, Santana and the Liberty defense yielded only one goal and eight total shots to a UNC attack that entered the game averaging 5.75 goals per game during its four-match winning streak. The Tar Heels only managed two shots in the first three periods and were held off the scoreboard until the 53rd minute.
In that match, Santana also helped put the Lady Flames ahead 2-0 with her assist on Liz Bustillo's first career goal in the 22nd minute. In Friday's game versus Georgetown, Santana assisted on Clarissa Iudicello's 54th minute goal, the fourth and final goal of the day for the home side.
Santana leads Liberty with six assists in 12 appearances (all starts) and is tied for fifth in the BIG EAST in assists.
Liberty has earned 12 BIG EAST weekly awards through seven weeks of the 2026 season.
Tomasi, Santana and No. 14-ranked Liberty (9-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) will play a road BIG EAST match on Friday at Providence (9-4, 2-1 BIG EAST). Game time is 2 p.m. at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
