Following a record-setting week, Liberty sophomore outside hitter Carly O'Brien has been named Conference USA (CUSA) Offensive Player of the Week.
Haiing from Pauline, S.C., O'Brien receives her first career conference player of the week honor. This is the fourth week in a row in which a Liberty player has received this honor, as Paige Overcash was named CUSA Offensive Player of the Week each of the first three weeks of the season.
O'Brien sparked Liberty to a 4-0 week, averaging 4.44 kills (.288), 0.33 aces, 2.89 digs and 0.22 blocks per set. She was instrumental in Liberty's three five-set victories on the week, especially during the team's 3-2 win over Houston, the Lady Flames' first-ever win over a Big 12 opponent. O'Brien also posted double-doubles in all four matches.
On Monday, she scored a match-high 19 kills and added two aces, 11 digs and one solo block in a 3-2 win over Radford. She scored five kills in the fifth set, including the match-clinching kill.
In Friday's 3-0 sweep of McNeese, O'Brien totaled 11 kills (.294) and 13 digs. O'Brien scored a career-high and program 25-point rally-scoring record 31 kills (.308) in a 3-2 win at Houston on Friday night, adding three aces and 18 digs. She scored five set-five kills against Houston.
On Saturday, O'Brien sent down a match-high 19 kills to go along with 10 digs in a 3-2 win over North Alabama. Her 19th kill of the match gave Liberty match point at 14-10.
Her 31 kills on Friday at Houston were the most by any CUSA player in a match so far this season.
The Lady Flames (12-1) open CUSA play this weekend, hosting Louisiana Tech on Friday and Saturday at Liberty Arena.
