CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Halle Engle's first goal of the season lifted Liberty (2-0-1) over Charlotte (2-1) 1-0 on the road Thursday evening. After playing a scoreless first half, Engle headed a cross from Avenley Monteith to secure the contest's lone tally.
Liberty dominated the pace of the first half but was unable to find the back of the net. Liberty was not shy of chances in the first 45, including a chance that was broken up in front of Avery Paulson. The Lady Flames registered seven shots to just two from the 49ers in the opening half.
Elise Graf nearly gave Liberty the lead coming out of the break. The defender struck a shot from just outside the goal box that was initially saved but then rang off the bottom of the crossbar.
Engle secured the go-ahead goal in the 54' minute of the contest. The forward was the nearest to a deep cross from Monteith and was able to get her head on the ball, fighting through a cluster of bodies. The redshirt sophomore has scored a point in each game this season, currently totaling four points (1g, 2a).
Liberty was able to maintain possession for the duration of the second half, needing only one save in the second half.
The Lady Flames begin the first leg of the week with a win before they host No. 17 Virginia in their home opener on Sunday.
Scoring Summary
54' – Liberty – Halle Engle (1) – Avenley Monteith, Haley Noblit
Thoughts from Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer
"I thought we started the game great and didn't capitalize on that momentum we had. Credit to the team for finding that much-needed goal and getting a shutout."
