Liberty Fights Through Rain, Tops FIU for Ninth Straight Win
10/11/2026 5:09:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty women's soccer team (11-2-1, 4-0-0 CUSA) extended its winning streak to nine games with a 1-0 shutout victory at home over FIU (4-6-3, 1-3-0 CUSA). Liberty now owns sole possession of first place in the Conference USA standings.
Playing through dense rain and a soaked field, Liberty peppered FIU goalkeeper Valery Restrepo with 22 shots. The FIU goalkeeper notched nine saves, keeping the Panthers in the game despite being outshot 22-3.
The Lady Flames and Avenley Monteith broke through in the 79th minute. Margaret Garner played a ball in that initially went off Isabella Wedemeyer's head, whose header wasn't threatening the goal, but it still forced a play from Restrepo. The FIU goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball with her arm, but she pushed it right to a charging Monteith, who sent a blister between outstretched limbs for the go-ahead tally. The score for Monteith was her third of the season, tying her career high from last season.
Liberty wins its ninth consecutive game, now tied for the second-longest winning streak in program history. The streak is also tied for the longest winning streak in Division l (Boise State, Southern Illinois).
