
Flames in 6th Place After Day 1 of General Hackler Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Wrapping up early with a solid finish allowed Liberty to move up the leaderboard late where they find themselves in sixth place after the first day of the General Hackler Championship.
Liberty shares sixth place with Kent State after both teams carded a 2-over par 290 during their first trip around The Dunes Golf & Beach Club (par 72, 7,233 yards).
Going off the No. 10 tee early Sunday morning, Liberty wrapped up the day on the course's front nine. Liberty posted three birdies on the par-5, No. 8 hole (538 yards) and two more birdies on the par-3, No. 9 hole (170 yards) to finish strong.
Only three teams in the 16-team field finished the first day in red figures. Auburn, the nation's top ranked golf team, carded a 10-under par 278 to hold a three shot lead.
No. 19 Duke stands in second place with a 7-under par 281, followed by Baylor, who stands in third place after an opening round 6-under par 282.
Two programs are one shot ahead of Liberty, as No. 39 Louisville and Furman opened the Coastal Carolina hosted tournament with a 1-over par 289.
Liberty currently stands ahead of three top-50 ranked teams. No. 8 Wake Forest is in eighth place after a 5-over par 293 opening round. No. 45 Charleston is tied for ninth place after a 6-over par 294, while No. 44 NC State is tied for 13th place after an 8-over par 296.
A total of 23 players finished round one in red figures, including a pair of Flames. Michael Lugiano led Liberty's late charge as he birdied his last two holes and is currently tied for ninth place after a 2-under par 70.
Ike Joy is one shot behind Lugiano after posting a 1-under par 71 to share 14th place with nine other players.
Baylor's Zach Heffernan and Auburn Brendan Valdes, the No. 17 individual golfer in the country, sit atop the 90-man leaderboard after open the event with a 5-under par 67.
The Flames will return to The Dunes Golf & Beach Club on Monday morning for round two. Liberty will be paired with golfers from Furman and Louisville as they head off the No. 1 tee (par 4, 425 Yards), starting at 9 a.m.
