Liberty Pulls Out Gritty 63-58 Win Over New Mexico State

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty ran its home winning streak to 10 Thursday evening vs. New Mexico State, but it was anything but easy. The Lady Flames needed a late 9-0 run to pull out a 63-58 victory in a back-and-forth contest with the Aggies.
The Lady Flames improve to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in CUSA play, giving them 26 consecutive seasons with 10 or more conference wins. Liberty, which completed a season sweep of New Mexico State and moved to 5-0 all-time against the Aggies, shot 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the free throw line, including 91.7 percent (11-of-12) during the final period.
New Mexico State drops to 12-12 overall and 5-6 in conference action despite another big night from CUSA's leading scorer Molly Kaiser (25 points). The Aggies led 50-48 midway through the fourth quarter before going more than four minutes between made field goals.

- New Mexico State emerged with a 16-15 lead after a first quarter which included two ties and three lead changes. Kaiser and Hess matched each other with seven points during the opening stanza.
- After scoring the first quarter's final three points, New Mexico State opened the second period with six points in a row. The visitors went ahead 22-15 after Lucia Yenes' second straight layup.
- The Aggies became the first visiting team to lead at Liberty Arena (31-30) since the home opener vs. Duke, led by Kaiser. She scored New Mexico State's final nine points of the half, giving her 16 during the first 20 minutes.
- Smuda scored six points during Liberty's 8-0 run to begin the third quarter.
- For the period, Liberty outscored the Aggies 15-6, taking a 45-37 advantage into the final stanza.
- The Lady Flames held Kaiser scoreless during the third period as her team shot just 16.7 percent (2-of-12).
