
No. 6 Liberty Earns 4th Shutout in a Row, Tops ODU 1-0 in BIG EAST Play

LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 6 Liberty earned its fourth shutout in a row, topping visiting Old Dominion 1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play on Friday afternoon at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
With the win, Liberty improves to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST play. The Lady Flames take sole possession of first place in the league and are now the only unbeaten team in conference. Liberty runs its home record to a perfect 5-0. The Monarchs drops to 4-6 and take their first BIG EAST loss, dropping to 2-1 in league play.
Julieta Tornati's penalty corner goal late in the second quarter proved to be the difference in the match. Liberty, which entered the game ranked second in the country in shutouts per game, notched its fifth shutout of the season, all of which have come in the last six contests.

Liberty's Julieta Tornati scored the game's only goal, coming just before halftime at the 28:55 mark. Liberty earned its second penalty corner of the period at the 28:37. After a bobbled pass, Tornati found her way into the circle with the ball and earned another penalty corner chance for the hosts. Following a Lou Combrinck insertion to Maite Altamirano, Altamirano set the ball for Dara Semmartin. Semmartin pivoted and set up Tornati to her left, and Tornati sent a blast through a pair of Monarch defenders and into the left side of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Liberty maintained its 1-0 lead at half and limited Old Dominion to two total shots in the second half, one of which came on goal by Josie Painter at the 54:21 mark. Freshman goalkeeper Diane Saint Martin was up to the task, making her lone save of the match. The Monarchs pulled goalkeeper Suus Broers with 3:59 left in regulation, but the Liberty defense held ODU shotless in the closing stretch.
