LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey's Julieta Tornati was tabbed the BIG EAST Field Hockey Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
This is Tornati's first career weekly honor, and she is the third BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the Lady Flames this season, joining Diane Saint Martin (Sept. 16) and Zoé Gaillard (Oct. 7).
In addition to Tornati's award, Liberty sophomore Dara Semmartin has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Semmartin's accolade is her team-best sixth weekly award of the fall and second honor roll distinction of the season. She also has four BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week awards to her credit this fall.
Tornati, a defender from Buenos Aires, Argentina, scored a goal and tallied one assist for three points in Liberty's three games last week. In the Lady Flames' 2-0 BIG EAST win over Providence on Friday, the freshman was involved in the game-winning goal, assisting on Tori Griffith's penalty corner tally in the 55th minute. Tornati sent a ball toward the top right corner of the cage that was batted in by Griffiths. It was Tornati's first assist of her collegiate career.
In Sunday's 2-1 triumph over Saint Joseph's on Sunday, Tornati scored what proved to be the game winner in the 29th minute on a penalty corner, her third goal of the season. Tornati's shot following a Semmartin feed found the left side of the goal. In 14 games this year, all starts, she has three goals (all game winners), one assist and seven points.
Semmartin, a defender, notched two assists in three games and helped the Liberty defense limit its opponents to two total goals in three contests (180 minutes). The Buenos Aires, Argentina native assisted on both Liberty goals (Tornati 29th minute and Josefina Tomasi 30th minute) in the victory over Saint Joseph's. The assists were her ninth and 10th of the season. Semmartin shares the team lead with 10 assists, her second straight season of double-digit assists.
Semmartin is tied for first in the BIG EAST and tied for 14th in the country in assists per game (0.71). Semmartin and the Lady Flames notched their seventh shutout of 2025 in the 2-0 blanking of the Friars to improve to a perfect 5-0 in the BIG EAST. Liberty is No. 5 nationally and first in the BIG EAST in shutouts per game (0.50). Semmartin and Liberty lost a tightly-contested 1-0 game at No. 3 Virginia last Tuesday, only the second setback of the season. Through 14 games (all starts), Semmartin has totaled five goals (No. 3 on team), 10 assists (tied for No. 1 on team) and 20 points (No. 2 on team).
Through eight weeks of the season, the Lady Flames have earned 19 total weekly awards (two national, 17 BIG EAST) – two NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week honorable mention selections, four defensive player of the week awards, three offensive player of the week honors, three freshman of the week accolades and seven weekly honor roll selections.
Tornati, Semmartin and seventh-ranked Liberty (12-2, 5-0 BIG EAST) will square off with the Temple Owls (10-5, 2-3 BIG EAST) in a conference matchup, Friday afternoon. Game time is 3 p.m. from the Temple Sports Complex in Philadelphia, Pa. The match can be seen on ESPN+.
