
Liberty Swimming & Diving Hosts ECU for Season Opener

The Liberty swimming & diving team will begin the 2025-26 season by hosting fellow American Conference member East Carolina, Friday and Saturday at Liberty Natatorium.
This weekend's meet will be a two-day contest, beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday. The two teams will begin day two at 11 a.m., Saturday.
The meet will have special significance to the program, as the Lady Flames will be raising funds and awareness for cancer research. It will also be the team's alumnae recognition meet, thanking alumnae for their contributions in building a championship program.

Team Notes
- Liberty, James Madison and Marshall joined the American Conference as affiliate members in women's swimming & diving beginning on July 1, 2025.
- In the 2025 American Conference Preseason Poll, Rice was voted first, followed by Liberty in second. ECU was tied with Marshall for sixth in the preseason poll.
- The Lady Flames also travel to American opponents Tulane and FIU later this month.
- Liberty won its seventh straight conference championship, claiming the 2025 Atlantic Sun Swimming & Diving Championships. The team posted 10 top-eight finishes on Saturday night, winning all five events while earning eight medals. For the meet, Liberty earned 40 A Finals, 26 podiums and 13 event wins. The Lady Flames set eight program records, five meet records and five conference records, while earning 10 NCAA B cuts and four NCAA Zone Qualifying scores.
- Head Coach Jake Shellenberger was voted ASUN Women's Swimming Coach of the Year. It was his seventh Coach of the Year honor and fourth in a row. Samantha Pickens was voted ASUN Women's Diving Coach of the Year.
- Kamryn Cannings was named Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet, winning the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly.
- Shannon Icard earned Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet honors, as she won one-meter, three-meter and platform at the ASUN Championships.
- Aly Bozzuto won the conference title in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, while finishing second in the 50 freestyle. She was named Most Outstanding Freshman of the Meet.
- Bozzuto and Cannings both represented the Lady Flames in the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.
- The Lady Flames were represented by Maddie Freece, Shannon Icard and Chloe LaCount at the NCAA Zone Championships, with Icard making two finals appearances.
- 16th-year Head Coach Jake Shellenberger has led the Lady Flames from the program's inception. He has posted a 136-41 dual-meet record, being named CCSA/ASUN Women's Swimming Coach of the Year seven times (2012, 2014, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).
- A program-record seven Lady Flames received CSCAA Individual Scholar All-America second team honors last season, in Aly Bozzuto, Kamryn Cannings, Malia Francis, Maddie Freece, Shannon Icard, Chloe LaCount and Sydney Stricklin.
- A total of six current Lady Flames have posted conference podium finishes in their career, led by six medals from Kamryn Cannings. Aly Bozzuto (3), Shannon Icard (3), Eden Troxell (3), Malia Francis (2), and Emily Harstad (1) have all podiumed as well.
- Liberty is 2-1 all-time against East Carolina in swimming & diving. Most recently, ECU downed Liberty 185.5-167.5 on Jan. 18, 2025 in Greenville, N.C. The Lady Flames defeated the Pirates in a tri meet on Oct. 22-23, 2021 which also featured Penn State. Liberty also won at East Carolina 156-144 on Jan. 7, 2023.The last meeting between
- The Pirates are 1-1 in dual meets this season, defeating Boston College and losing to Duke last weekend. ECU finished fourth out of six teams at the 2025 American Conference Championships.
