
Cornell Defeats Liberty in Straight Sets

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Liberty and Cornell battled through a tightly-contested first two sets, before the Big Red pulled away for the 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-18) sweep over the Lady Flames on Friday at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House.
Cornell (1-0) opened its season with a victory today, while Lady Flames (2-2) have gone 1-1 at this weekend's Kristen Dickmann Invitational. Liberty swept Navy last night behind a season-high 15 aces.

Notable Numbers
- Cornell outhit Liberty .280-.127 for the match, also leading in kills (45-34), assists (42-33), aces (5-3) and digs (37-33). Both teams posted 11 blocks.
- The Big Red put three players in double figures in kills, led by a match-high 16 kills by Eliza Konvicka. Haley Clark registered 11 kills and a match-high four aces to go along with three blocks, while Jaida Sione scored 10 kills. Doga Ozalp dished out a match-high 38 assists, while Camryn Carlo recorded six blocks.
- Liberty freshmen Carly O'Brien and Paige Overcash tied for the team lead with six kills apiece. Classmate Charli Crowson distributed a team-high 13 assists, while Madison Blane contributed a match-high seven blocks. Erica Lowery collected a match-high 16 digs.
- Liberty used a 3-0 run to erase a 23-20 deficit late in set one, a rally capped by a Charli Morris-Madison Blane block. However, kills by Clark and Konvicka gave Cornell the narrow 25-23 win.
- The Lady Flames led set two 22-21 after a Morris kill. The Big Red then ended the set on a 4-0 run to claim the 2-0 match lead.
- Cornell now leads the all-time series with Liberty in volleyball, 2-1. The Lady Flames won the last meeting before today, 3-1 on Sept. 12, 2008. The Big Red topped Liberty for the first time since Sept. 11, 1993, a match held in Syracuse, N.Y.
- Blane as posted a combined 15 blocks so far this week in Annapolis. With 311 career blocks, Blane needs eight more blocks to pass Ashley Webber (2005-08) for 10th in program history in career blocks.
- Liberty has posted 10 or more blocks in a match twice so far this season.
- Erica Lowery posted her third double-digit dig match of the season and 45th for her career.
