The Flames jumpstart their 2024-25 season this weekend at the Rod Myers Invitational, the first of four events on Liberty's fall schedule.
The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Duke at the Duke University Golf Club (par 72, 7,154 yards) in Durham, N.C. Play gets underway on Sunday with 36 holes of action, followed by the final 18 holes on Monday.
This event has been a staple of Liberty's fall schedule. This will be the ninth time the Flames have participated in the event, which started in 2010.
The Flames played in this tournament for seven-straight seasons (2012-18) and returned in 2022.
Liberty's best finish at this event was a runner-up finish in 2016 when former Flames' All-American and current LIV Golf tour member Kieran Vincent set the tournament record with a winning score of 15-under par 201 (67-67-67).
In Liberty's last showing at this tournament, the Flames finished tied for sixth place with a 10-over par 874 (299-292-283). Austin Barbin (72-76-69) and Jonathan Yaun (74-69-74) paced the Flames at 1-over par 217 and finished tied for 17th place.
Looking to lead the Flames during their first event of the 2024-25 season will be Josh Ryan and Ike Joy. Both players played significant roles in Liberty capturing the 2024 CUSA Men's Golf Championship title and helping the Flames advance to their 14th NCAA Regional.
Ryan paced the Flames during the 2023-24 season in nearly every statistical category. He was Liberty's top finisher in 10 of 12 events, held a team-best 70.75 stroke average, played 24-of-36 rounds at par or better (66.7 percent) and posted 10 sub-70 rounds.
In his first season as a mainstay in Liberty's starting lineup, Joy posted a 73.50 season stroke average, last year. He played 8-of-26 rounds at par or better and had a pair of top-25 finishes.
Joy will be the first Flame off the tee on Sunday morning where the Flames will start play on the No. 10 hole at 8:15 a.m. Liberty will be parred with golfers from Princeton and NC State during the first day of play.
