
Liberty Stands in 4th Place after Day 1 of Rod Myers Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – The Flames kept pace with the top teams during day one of the Rod Myers Invitational and find themselves in fourth place heading into the final round.
In its first event of the 2024-25 season, Liberty carded a four-under par 284 during its first trip around the Duke University Golf Club (par 72, 7,154 yards). Following 18 holes of play, Liberty found itself in second place and trailing FGCU by four strokes.
However, tournament host Duke (285-281) and NC State (288-278) were a combined 17-under par during the afternoon flight to push themselves up the leaderboard. The pair of ACC foes share the overnight lead at 10-under par 566.
FGCU is currently in third place and three shots back following a 7-under par 569 (280-289). Liberty trails its former ASUN Conference foe by seven strokes and stands in fourth place at an even par 576 (284-292).
Liberty's strong play during its first tournament of the year was led by Evan Barbin and Ike Joy, who both enter tomorrow's final round inside the top five on the leaderboard.
Barbin led the Flames and ranked second in the 72-man field with 10 birdies on the day. He matched his low round of the 2023-24 season by carding back-to-back two-under par 70s and is currently tied for third place at a 4-under par 140 (70-70).
Joy is just one shot behind his fellow teammate and is tied for fifth place at a 3-under par 141 (69-72). Joy also matched his low round of the 2023-24 season by carding a 3-under par 69 during the morning flight thanks to a clean card of three birdies and 15 pars.
Barbin and Joy, along with the rest of the field, are chasing NC State's Nick Mathews, who is the overnight leader at a 10-under par 134 (70-64).
The Flames will be among the first golfers on the course tomorrow, beginning tomorrow's final round at 8:10 a.m. off the No. 1 tee. Liberty will be parred with Charlotte and Cincinnati.
