
Lady Flames Go 1-1 on Opening Day of Ohio Invitational

ATHENS, Ohio - Liberty split a pair of matches on day one of the Ohio Green & White Invitational, downing Oakland in five sets (25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13) before falling to the host Ohio Bobcats, 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 15-25), Friday at the Convocation Center.
Liberty (5-6) went 1-1 today, while Oakland (3-8) fell to both the Lady Flames and Eastern Kentucky. Ohio (4-5) snapped a four-match winless streak tonight, winning for the first time since Sept. 6 at High Point

The Lady Flames will take on former ASUN foe Eastern Kentucky tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. to wrap up nonconference play.

- Liberty overcame an early 6-3 set-five deficit, staging an 8-3 run to take the lead, 11-9. Oakland tied it at 11-11 and again at 12-12. Kills by Carly O'Brien and Kamryn Bacus gave Liberty set point, 14-12. Following an Oakland sideout, O'Brien ended the match with a back-row kill.
- The Lady Flames outhit the Golden Grizzlies, .206-.162. Liberty also led in kills (68-45), assists (60-39) and digs, while Oakland held the advantage in aces (8-7) and blocks (8-6). The two teams combined for 28 service errors.
- Bacus led all players with a season-high 20 kills, adding 12 digs. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Helmich hit .524 with a season-best 14 kills. Madison Blane (10 kills, three blocks) and Carly O'Brien (career-high eight kills, 11 digs), both hit .389. Charli Crowson dished up a career-high 34 assists, while Erica Lowery collected 17 digs. Kate Gammer served up three aces.
- Oakland's Gentry Brown posted a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs to go along with three aces. Tyler Linkhart scored 10 kills, while Emily Wichmann collected a match-high 18 digs. Rachel Rossman totaled 20 assists and three aces, while Ainsley Guse posted a match-best five blocks.
- Bacus recorded her ninth career 20-kill match, including eighth as a Lady Flame. Today's match against Oakland marked Bacus' 11th career double-double and first this season.
- Helmich tied her career high with 14 kills against Oakland, as she had previously scored 14 kills against High Point, Aug. 27, 2021 during her time at James Madison.
- Crowson's 34 assists versus Oakland were the most by a Liberty freshman since Grace Allread recorded 34 assists at Purdue Fort Wayne, Oct. 1, 2021.
- Lowery posted her 50th career double-digit dig match this afternoon.
- Liberty is 2-1 in five-set matches this season, compared to 0-2 for Oakland.
- Each of Liberty's all-time meetings against Oakland has resulted in a 3-2 win for the Lady Flames, with the first meeting coming Aug. 24, 2018 in For Wayne, Ind.
- Ohio took set one, 25-22, before Liberty burst out to a 7-2 advantage in set two. However, the Bobcats quickly went on an 8-0 run to lead, 10-7. In total, Ohio outscored Liberty 23-10 after the early going, claiming the second set, 25-17.
- The hosts outhit Liberty .321-.093 for the match, as the Lady Flames had their lowest hitting percentage of the season so far. Ohio also led in kills (39-31), assists (35-30), digs (35-29) and blocks (9-2). Liberty held a 3-2 edge in aces.
- Kam Hunt scored a match-high 14 kills for the Bobcats, while Anna Kharchynska hit .579 with 11 kills. Olivia Gardner posted a match-high six blocks, while Kendall Hickey led all players with 10 digs. Chariti McKellar dished out a match-best 15 assists.
- Kate Gammer and Madison Blane (.417) shared the team lead, scoring seven kills each, with Blane adding a team-high two aces and two blocks. Charli Crowson distributed 14 assists, while Erica Lowery collected a team-high nine digs.
- Ohio leads Liberty 3-0 in the all-time series, with the last meeting coming on Sept. 2, 2006.
- Current Ohio Head Coach Geoff Carlston is the uncle of current Liberty senior Elizabeth Helmich.
- Blane passed Casey Goodwin (2016-19) into eighth place all-time at Liberty with 338 career blocks.
- Gammer surpassed the 900 career kill mark today, with 908 career kills entering tomorrow.
- Today was Liberty's first time playing in the state of Ohio since competing in the Kent State Classic in 2012.
