Combrinck (OPOW) and Skinner (DPOW) Earn BIG EAST Weekly Awards

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey's Lou Combrinck and Michaela Skinner earned weekly accolades from the BIG EAST Conference on Tuesday afternoon. Combrinck was tabbed the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while Skinner collected BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Both players are receiving weekly superlative awards for the first time in their respective careers after leading Liberty to a pair of shutout home wins over No. 4 Duke (1-0 final) and William & Mary (5-0 final) this past weekend.
Combrinck led the Lady Flames in goals (2), assists (2) and points (6) in the pair of victories. In Sunday's 1-0 triumph over No. 4 Duke, Combrinck tallied the game-winning goal in the 48th minute on a rebound, her second goal of the season.
In Friday's victory over the William & Mary Tribe, she notched a goal and added two assists for four points. Combrinck, a native of Hillcrest, South Africa, assisted on Martu Cian's goal, Liberty's first of the match. She later assisted on Reagan Underwood's marker, the third goal of the day for the home side. Combrinck's goal in the 53rd minute put Liberty ahead 4-0 in an eventual 5-0 win.
Skinner had an outstanding weekend in goal, compiling a 2-0 record, 0.00 goals-against-average (GAA), five saves and a pair of shutouts. On Sunday against the No. 4-ranked Blue Devils, Skinner made five saves in a shutout effort. The redshirt sophomore netminder was at her best in the fourth quarter with four saves. Skinner and the Liberty defense turned aside 10 total Duke shots in the final 15 minutes and six penalty corner chances in that frame. The Lady Flames shut out Duke for the first time ever in what was the 10th ever meeting between the two squads.
Skinner notched her first career shutout in Liberty's 5-0 victory against William & Mary on Friday afternoon. In five starts this season, she boasts a 4-1 record with a 0.76 GAA, 14 saves and two shutouts. The Chesapeake, Va. native ranks ninth nationally in goals-against-average (0.76) and 13th in save percentage (.778), leading the BIG EAST in both categories.
