
Flames Moving On to Match Play at CUSA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. – The Flames saved their best round of stroke play at the CUSA Men's Golf Championship for when it mattered most. Liberty carded a 5-under par 283 on Wednesday to secure a top-four finish in stroke play at the conference championship event.
With the top-four finish, the Flames have advanced to tomorrow's match play sessions, which feature two semifinal matches in the morning and a championship match in the afternoon.
Liberty, who finished stroke play in third place, will square off against Sam Houston in the second morning match, starting at 9:40 a.m. EST/8:40 a.m. CST.
The first match of the day will feature Louisiana Tech, who won the stroke play portion of the championship, and UTEP, who survived a tight battle for fourth place. That match will tee off at 9 a.m. EST/8 a.m. CST.
The winners of the two semifinal matches will square off against each other during a winner-take-all championship match, beginning at approximately 1:40 p.m. EST/12:40 p.m. CST. The victor will receive Conference USA's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Liberty finished the stroke play portion of the event with an overall 1-over par 865 (290-292-283). Wednesday's 5-under par 283 was the team's second-lowest 18-hole total of the spring season.
Louisiana Tech claimed the top seed in match play with a 4-under par 860 (280-294-286). Sam Houston blitzed the Texarkana Country Club (par 72, 6,969 yards) with a final round 10-under par to finish with the No. 2 seed with an overall 1-under par 863 (294-291-278).
UTEP bested Middle Tennessee by two strokes to claim the final match play spot with a 12-over par 876 (291-297-288).
Liberty's Josh Ryan led the charge for the Flames, securing a second-place finish with a 6-under par 210 (71-69-70). After a bogey on the par-3, No. 3 hole, Ryan played the final 15 holes at 3-under par with three birdies and 12 pars.
The runner-up finish, Ryan's best of the 2023-24 season, secured him a spot on the CUSA All-Championship team.
Ryan finished one shot behind CUSA medalist Luke Fuller of Western Kentucky, who carded a winning score of 7-under par 209 (68-71-70).
Joining Ryan and Fuller on the All-Championship team were LA Tech's Niilo Maki-Petaja and Hunter Battles, Sam Houston's Gene Chaikangwal and Josh German, MTSU's Michael Barnard and Jacksonville State's Isaac MacNaoughton.
