PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – It was a battling type of day for the Flames who stand in sixth place following the first round at The Hayt.
The Flames were 8-over par following eight holes of play around the Sawgrass Country Club (par 72, 6,966 yards).
However, Liberty played its final 10 holes at a combined 1-over par to finish the first round of the North Florida hosted event at 9-over par 297.
The 14-team field battled winds between 10 to 15 MPH on Saturday, driving the scores up at the course. The Sawgrass Country Club played at nearly four strokes over par (75.90 scoring average) with only 12 players in the 84-man field finding red figures.
No. 21 Alabama was one of two teams to finish the day with an under-par score. Alabama fired a 6-under par 282 and leads No. 26 Ohio State by four strokes (2-under par 286).
North Carolina, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, currently sits in third place with a 1-over par 289.
Tournament host North Florida struggled on its home course. The No. 25 ranked Ospreys are currently tied for eighth place following an opening round 13-over par 301.
Alabama's Canon Claycomb and Jacksonville's Alexandre Vandermoten finished atop the individual leaderboard following day one with a 3-under par 69.
Liberty's Isaac Simmons paced the Flames during play on Saturday. The graduate student overcame a double bogey at No. 11 (par 5, 517 yards), which was his second hole of the day, to finish tied for eighth place with a 1-under par 71.
Simmon's sixth round at par or better during the 2023-24 season was aided by a team-high four birdies.
Josh Ryan and Brett Reid are just three shots behind Simmons and are currently tied for 25th place at 2-over par 74.
Much like the team and Simmons, Austin Barbin overcame a difficult open to help the Flames. The senior was 10-over par after his first seven holes, but he put together a birdie-par-eagle-birdie stretch during his back nine to post a counting score for Liberty (6-over par 78).
The second round is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning with the 14-team field heading off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Liberty will be in the second wave to go off the No. 1 tee on Sunday, starting at 8:50 a.m.
