Liberty Allows Score Late in 2-2 Draw Against New Mexico State
10/6/2024 4:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
New Mexico State secured the early lead in the eighth minute off a corner attempt deposited by Mya Gonzales for her first goal of the season. Gonzales found the ball on the far side of the field and sent the ball toward the middle of the net. Liberty midfielder cleared the ball near the end line but the officials determined the ball was completely across the frame.
The Lady Flames drew even in the 28' minute off a clean strike from forward Ivy Garner (4). The junior received a pass from Halle Engle and needed to play off a single defender. Garner nailed a shot from a tough angle and squeezed the ball past a closing Aggie goalkeeper, Valerie Guha, sending it into the upper corner of the net.
Just after the half, Liberty's Garner and Engle combined for the score in the 48' minute to gain the 2-1 lead. Garner was making a run down the field and found Engle with space around her. Engle made one move to get around a defender and sent a shot past Guha to the far side of the net.
Liberty kept its foot on the gas but could not convert on chances throughout the rest of the half. New Mexico State earned the equalizing goal from Milana Eyrich, the first goal of the season for her. Eyrich received a deep cross that the Aggies' Loma McNeese let pass through her legs to find a streaking Eyrich.
The Lady Flames secured a 1-0-1 homestand following a victory over UTEP on Thursday night. Liberty improves to 5-1-1 at home in 2024.
