
Iritxity Irigoyen Named National DPOW For 3rd Time in Career

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey senior goalkeeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen has been named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Defensive Player of the Week for a third time in her career.
Iritxity Irigoyen was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for the ninth time in her career.
Iritxity Irigoyen won both of her starts this past week while posting a 0.43 goals-against-average, seven saves, a .875 save percentage and one shutout. Liberty's wins included a 3-1 road triumph at No. 6 Virginia last Tuesday and a 1-0 shootout victory at home against American, last Sunday. In the game at UVA, the senior made five saves while allowing only one goal. Iritxity Irigoyen kept the Cavaliers off the scoreboard for the first three periods, helping the Lady Flames build a 3-0 lead. She also made three saves in the fourth quarter to preserve Liberty's first-ever road victory over Virginia.
On Sunday against American, the goalkeeper kept the visitors off the scoreboard for 80 minutes and stopped four of the Eagles' five attempts in the shootout. Iritxity Irigoyen made two saves in the match as well in recording her 19th career shutout.
On the season, Iritxity Irigoyen boasts a 4-0 record with a 0.46 goals-against-average (GAA), 13 saves, a .867 save percentage and two shutouts. She leads the nation in GAA (0.46) and ranks third in save percentage (.867) for a Liberty defense that leads the country in GAA (0.46) and is second nationally in save percentage (.889).
Iritxity Irigoyen's other national defensive player of the week honors came on Nov. 10, 2022 and March 24, 2021.
Iritxity Irigoyen and No. 9 Liberty (4-0) will be back in action against two top-15 teams this weekend. The Lady Flames will face No. 14 Harvard (2-0) on Friday afternoon at home (4 p.m.), followed by a road matchup at No. 13 Duke (2-1) on Sunday (1 p.m.).
