
No. 14 Liberty Tops American 1-0 in Shootout

LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 14 Liberty came out on top in a shootout to stay unbeaten, defeating American 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
Kyleigh Faust and Milagros Arteta scored in the shootout for the Lady Flames, while senior goalkeeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen stopped four of the Eagles' five attempts in the shootout to seal the victory.
Liberty bolsters its overall record to 4-0 with today's win. American drops to 2-2 after the setback. The Lady Flames improve to 2-0 all-time against the Eagles, with both games needing overtime or longer to settle. Liberty edged American 2-1 in overtime back in 2016.
Prior to this afternoon, the last time the Lady Flames won a game in a shootout was their 3-2 (4-2 in shootout) win over No. 1 Rutgers in the 2021 NCAA Field Hockey Championship Elite Eight (Nov. 14, 2021).

Turning Point
Liberty nearly won the game on two different occasions, once late in regulation and once in double overtime. In regulation, the Lady Flames earned a penalty stroke with less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter (55:09 mark). Milagros Arteta's stroke attempt was saved by American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood.
In double overtime with 3:59 left on the clock, Arteta scored what appeared to be the game-winning goal on a breakaway opportunity following a pass from Bethany Dykema. After an officials' review, the goal was disallowed.
In the shootout, Liberty went ahead 1-0 early, as Iritxity Irigoyen turned aside an attempt from Delia Rabatin and Kyleigh Faust converted on a stroke attempt after her teammate Tuti Dell Anna was tripped on her initial attempt. Tied 1-1 through two rounds, it was Arteta who put the Lady Flames ahead for good in the shootout. The graduate student scored an acrobat reverse goal while being tripped by the goalkeeper, putting Liberty up 2-1. Iritxity Irigoyen stopped American's final two opportunities (Tayla-Jade Weiss and Kaleigh Missimer) in the shootout to secure the dramatic victory.
