BIG EAST Release
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Jodie Conolly received her second BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week award of the season.
In addition to Conolly's accolade, forward Milagros Arteta was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Conolly and Arteta's recognitions come on the heels of their performances against a pair of top-15 teams in No. 14 Harvard and No. 13 Duke, last weekend.
Conolly's award is her third career BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honor and the second in the first three weeks of the year. The fifth-year senior defender from Pietermartizuburg, South Africa totaled three assists, three points, eight shots and three shots on goal in a pair of games.
Conolly and the Liberty defense also limited the Harvard offense to one goal and nine total shots. The Crimson entered the game averaging 2.50 goals per game and 11.50 shots per game.
Conolly was involved in all three Liberty goals in those games, assisting on each one of them. In last Friday's 2-1 home overtime win over No. 14 Harvard, Conolly assisted on Arteta's penalty corner goal at the 14:54 mark. The defender then set up the game winner in overtime (68:53 mark), sending a ball into the middle of the circle that was tipped by Martu Cian into the right side of the cage. Conolly's two-assist game was her sixth career game with multiple assists.
On Sunday against the No. 13 Blue Devils, Conolly set up Arteta's fourth quarter goal with her team-best fifth assist of 2023. She shares the team lead with seven points (1 g, 5 a) through six games and ranks eighth nationally and second in the BIG EAST in assists per game (0.83). Conolly is now in sole possession of seventh place in program history with 27 career assists in her time in a Liberty uniform.
Arteta, a forward from Córdoba, Argentina, paced the Liberty offense with two goals this past weekend. On Friday versus the Harvard Crimson, she opened the scoring with a goal late in the first quarter to put the Lady Flames up 1-0 in the eventual 2-1 overtime triumph. Arteta helped Liberty earn the penalty corner in overtime, sending a pass that hit a Harvard defender's foot.
In Sunday's game at No. 13 Duke, she scored Liberty's only goal of the afternoon, which came midway through the fourth quarter (52:18 mark) on a penalty corner. Through six games, the forward leads Liberty in goals (3) and shares the team lead in points (7).
Conolly, Arteta and No. 10 Liberty (5-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) will play their BIG EAST opener against Old Dominion (2-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) in what will be a rematch of the 2022 BIG EAST Championship title game. Game time is 3 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field, and the match can also be seen on ESPN+.
