Liberty suffers its first loss of the 2023 campaign, falling to 5-1 on the year. Today's game was the Lady Flames' fourth of the season that has gone into overtime and/or a shootout. Meanwhile, Duke bolsters its overall record to 4-1 and completes a 2-0 weekend.
Today's match marked the sixth time the two teams have gone into overtime in only nine all-time meetings.

Turning Point
After a scoreless opening three periods, the action picked up in the fourth frame with Duke striking first. The Blue Devils' Brynn Crouse scored on a penalty corner rebound at the 47:07 mark to provide the hosts a 1-0 edge. Liberty responded back with a short corner goal of its own midway through the fourth period (52:18). Milagros Arteta found the back of the cage on a redirect, assisted by Jodie Conolly.
In overtime, Duke generated three penalty corner chances, and Liberty senior goalkeeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen made three straight saves on those attempts. With the clock under one minute in overtime (69:12 mark), McVeigh drove into the circle up the right side and lifted a short-side shot past Iritxity Irigoyen to win the game.

The Lady Flames will return home for their first BIG EAST game of the 2023 campaign. Liberty will meet Old Dominion (2-3), Friday at 3 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field in what will be a rematch of the 2022 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship title game.
Liberty bested ODU 3-1 in that championship game to win its second straight BIG EAST crown and advance to the NCAA Field Hockey Championship.
This will be the 17th all-time meeting between the two programs. Liberty holds a 9-7 edge in the series.
