LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty field hockey team is ranked 14th in the country entering the 2023 season. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) unveiled its first Penn Monto/NFHCA National Division I National Coaches Poll on Tuesday afternoon, featuring the top 20 teams in the nation.
Liberty enters the fall campaign as the back-to-back BIG EAST champion and is the highest ranked BIG EAST squad in the preseason poll, ahead of No. 15 Connecticut and No. 18 Old Dominion.
The Lady Flames closed the 2022 campaign as the No. 13-ranked team in the nation and have begun the year as nationally-ranked squad for a seventh straight season in which there was a preseason poll. There was no preseason poll during the spring 2021 campaign.
Defending national champion North Carolina earned the top spot in this year's preseason poll, followed by No. 2 Northwestern, No. 3 Maryland, No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Penn State. This fall, Liberty will compete against six teams who appear in the 2023 preseason rankings, including: No. 1 North Carolina (Oct. 8, away), No. 6 Virginia (Aug. 29, away), No. 13 Harvard (Sept. 8, home), No. 15 Connecticut (Oct. 20, home), No. 18 Old Dominion (Sept. 15, home), and No. 20 Duke (Sept. 10, away).
The Lady Flames will commence their season this Friday evening at home against Kent State. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
