
Liberty Shuts Down Winthrop 4-0

The Liberty Flames shut out the Winthrop Eagles 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark.
Led by starter Garrett Horn, who pitched the first five innings, five Liberty pitchers combined to hold Winthrop to four hits to record the Flames’ first shutout of 2023.
Liberty second baseman John Simmons recorded the first two-hit game of his career and drove in a run in the contest. Flames designated hitter Victor Castillo also had two hits and scored a run.
Liberty moves to 2-3 on the year. The Flames have won two straight. Winthrop falls to 3-2. The Eagles have lost their last two games.

The Turning Point
With Liberty leading 3-0 in the fourth inning, Winthrop opened the home half of the inning by putting runners on the corners with no one out. Third baseman Joseph Sveitz followed by flying out to right field. Eagle outfielder McKinley Evers tried to score on the play but was thrown out by Liberty right fielder Camden Troyer. Two batters later, Horn induced a flyout by shortstop Ramses Cordova to end the inning without allowing a run.

- Simmons collects two hits in a game for the first time in his collegiate career. The freshman infielder also had his first RBI as a collegian.
- Castillo recorded his second multi-hit game of the season.
- Liberty catcher Gray Betts had a single in the contest. The senior has now had at least one hit in three consecutive games.
