
No. 11 Tennessee Tops Liberty 5-1

The No. 11 Tennessee Lady Vols pulled away for a 5-1 win over Liberty, Saturday at Nancy Almaraz Stadium.
Tennessee (6-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season, as the Lady Vols had fallen to Cal State Fullerton earlier this afternoon. Liberty falls to 1-8 with its fifth setback in a row. The Lady Vols went 3-1 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, while the Lady Flames are 0-3 heading into tomorrow’s tournament finale.

Notable Numbers
- Tennessee outhit Liberty 6-3 for the game while the Lady Vols recorded the game’s two errors. For the game, Tennessee left seven runners on base, while Liberty stranded just two.
- Payton Gottshall (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out six in 6 1/3 innings. Karlyn Pickens came on in relief and got a game-ending double play with just one pitch thrown.
- Karlie Keeney (0-6) allowed five runs on six hits, walking three and striking out six.

Turning Point
- Liberty trailed 1-0 after Milloy’s first-inning homer. Howard led off with a double for Liberty before going to third on a wild pitch. A diving catch in left robbed Caroline Hudson of an RBI hit. Gottshall hit Rachel Craine with a pitch, but then fanned Soto. The Lady Flames ran out of the inning, as Howard was caught between third and home on a double steal play.
- Tennessee led 3-0 after Milloy’s second homer. Howard got Liberty on the board with a solo shot in the sixth, but Tennessee tacked on two in the seventh for the 5-1 final.
Beyond the Box Score
- Tennessee is now 22-1 all-time against Liberty in softball, with the Lady Flames’ lone win over the Lady Vols to date coming in an elimination game at the 2021 NCAA Knoxville Regional.
- Howard is the first Lady Flame this season to record two extra-base hits in the same game
- Six out of Liberty’s nine opponents so far this season have been ranked in the Top 25 at time of meeting, with a seventh, Ole Miss, receiving votes in the national polls.
