
Flames in 5th Place after Day 1 of ASUN Championship

No. 36 Liberty will have an uphill battle to fight if it wants to defend its ASUN Men’s Golf Championship following Day 1 action at the championship event.
The Flames, the No. 1 seed in the event, are currently in fifth place following a 10-over par 294 on its first trip around the University of Georgia Golf Course (par 71, 7,258 yards).
Last year, Liberty captured its first-ever ASUN Championship and sixth conference title in program history by carding a championship record 20-under par 832 (273-281-278).
The 12-team field is chasing No. 39 North Florida, who holds a 10-shot lead after opening the championship with a 4-under par 280.
The Flames will return to the home course of the Georgia Bulldogs in the morning when they will be sent off the No. 1 tee along with golfers from FGCU and North Alabama, starting at 9:30 a.m. for round two.

Field Reflections:
- 39 North Florida was the only team in the field to finish the opening round of the championship in red figures.
- Lipscomb is currently in second place after a 6-over par 290, followed by Jacksonville State’s 8-over par 292 and FGCU 9-over par 293.
- Only five players in the 60-man field turned in under-par scores during Day 1 of the Championship.
- North Florida’s Robbie Higgins had a clear card while posting a 5-under par 66 to hold the clubhouse lead after the first day.
- Fourth other golfers are four shots behind Higgins after carding a 1-under par 70.
- The University of Georgia Golf Course played at a scoring average of 75.57 on Sunday.
Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes:
- Liberty’s Isaac Simmons leads the Flames and is tied for seventh place following a 1-over par 72 round on Sunday.
- Simmons carded four birdies on the day, including a pair during his final five holes.
- The Flames led the field in par-5 scoring (4.47 scoring average) and had all five players post a birdie on the par-5, No. 7 hole (556 yards).
- Liberty also led the field in birdies (18), but ranked last in the field in pars (43).
- Austin Barbin opened his first championship event with the Flames with a 2-over par 73, which has the junior transfer tied for 12th
- Barbin birdied all three of the par-5 holes on the course on Sunday.
- Rounding out Liberty’s top-20 golfers is Austin Duncan, who is tied for 19th place following a 3-over par 74.
