A late surge on Monday allowed No. 36 Liberty to climb up the leaderboard during the second round of the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Golf Tournament.
When play was suspended on Monday due to darkness, Liberty had one of the better second rounds going. The Flames find themselves in sixth place and six shots behind tournament host Virginia, who leads the 13-team field at 12-under par.
With three holes left to play in the round, the Flames are in sixth place at 6-under par. Liberty is one of four teams who are currently 7-under par during their second round (also Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia’s B team).
Liberty’s afternoon surge was due in part to the strong play of Kieran Vincent, who is currently 8-under par with two holes left to play.
Vincent, who is currently ranked No. 46 individually in the country, is tied with Virginia’s George Duangmanee and Tennessee’s Spencer Cross atop the individual leaderboard.
Austin Duncan has also helped with the Flames’ second-round climb. The senior transfer is currently 2-under par during his second round and is overall tied for 19th place.
The 13-team field will return to the Birdwood Golf Course (par 71, 7,058 yards) at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning to resume the second round. The third round will start immediately afterward with a shotgun start using the same pairings as rounds 1 and 2.
