
Hess Enjoys Career Night in 79-48 Win Over Hampton

Liberty sophomore Emma Hess set career highs for three-pointers (5) and points (17), sparking the Lady Flames to a 79-48 victory over Hampton, Thursday evening at Liberty Arena.
Liberty closes its season-opening homestand at 2-1 after dominating the Lady Pirates both outside (season-high 10 triples) and inside (51-23 rebounding advantage). The Lady Flames have now won nine straight head-to-head meetings with their Commonwealth foes, including four in as many seasons.
Hampton (2-1) falls for the first time this season, as the Lady Pirates shot just 32.7 percent (17-of-52) and were held 40 points below their season scoring average. Camryn Hill was a bright spot for the visitors, scoring a game-high 21 points. However, her teammates shot a combined 10-of-35 from the field and 1-of-10 from three-point range.

Liberty converted 19 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points and tallied 36 bench points to Hampton’s five as 12 Lady Flames got their names into the scoring column.
Turning Point
Hampton’s Nylah Young connected on back-to-back layups within a 19-second span of the second quarter, pulling the visitors within four points (24-20).
Liberty held the Lady Pirates without a made field goal for the remainder of the half, fashioning a 14-3 surge to take a 38-23 halftime lead. Hess hit two triples during the run, which was punctuated by a Mya Berkman three-point play.
The Lady Flames’ advantage remained in double figures throughout the second half.
Game Summary
First Quarter
- Jordan Bailey knocked down two triples within the first 3:42 of play, helping Liberty jump out to an early 10-2 advantage.
- Liberty remained on top for the rest of the opening stanza, taking a 17-11 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Lady Flames outrebounded the Lady Pirates, 12-5, and blocked a pair of Hampton shots during the period.
Second Quarter
- Aided by the aforementioned 14-3 run, the Lady Flames outscored Hampton, 21-12, during the second period to extend their halftime cushion to 38-23. Liberty scored 15 points off Hampton’s nine first-half turnovers.
Third Quarter
- Liberty made four triples during the third quarter, enabling the Lady Flames to push their lead out to as much as 26 points (55-29) on their way to a 59-38 cushion through three periods.
Fourth Quarter
- Bella Smuda opened the fourth-quarter scoring with three straight layups. Liberty went on to double up Hampton by a 20-10 count over the final 10 minutes, leading by as many as 33 points (79-46) along the way.
- Liberty’s 31-point margin of victory was its largest since a 75-39 win over Lee on Dec. 30, 2021.
Notes and Nuggets
- Hess (17 points, 5 triples) easily surpassed her previous career highs of 11 points and three triples in just 21 minutes of playing time. She has knocked down nine triples at a 42.9 percent clip during the first three games of her sophomore campaign.
- Berkman’s 13 points put her into double figures for the second game in a row and pushed her career total to 960. She hit all four of her field goal attempts on the night and is now shooting 87.5 percent (14-of-16) for the year.
- Freshman Caroline Shiery scored the first five points of her career on Thursday.
- Audrey Clark’s four points were her first tallies since an ASUN quarterfinal matchup with Bellarmine on March 11, 2021.
- Liberty has now defeated Hampton by 20 or more points during each of the last four seasons. After the Lady Pirates won each of their first 11 head-to-head matchups with Liberty, the Lady Flames have now taken the last nine meetings.
- The Lady Flames improved to 30-3 in their third season at Liberty Arena.
- Liberty has now won back-to-back matchups with CAA opponents on the heels of a five-game losing streak against the CAA.
Up Next
Liberty will take to the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, remaining within the Commonwealth for a matchup against James Madison (3-1). Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. for the Lady Flames’ inaugural visit to the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
