Liberty midfielder Lizzie Hamlett has been tabbed the BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.
Hamlett’s honor is her second career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week recognition. She received the award for the first time since Nov. 2, 2021. Hamlett’s weekly award is her second of the season, as she garnered inclusion on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll back two weeks ago (Sept. 20).
Hamlett's selection gives Liberty two straight BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors. Last week, Daniella Rhodes earned the award and went on to named NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week.
Meanwhile, defender Bethany Dykema has been selected to this week’s BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Dykema’s honor roll selection is her team-best third of the 2022 campaign.
Hamlett led the Liberty offense in goals (3) and points (7) in games this past weekend against Quinnipiac (5-0 win) and No. 1 North Carolina (6-3 loss). On Friday versus the Bobcats, Hamlett scored a game-high two goals in a winning effort. The senior from Fredericksburg, Va. tallied the goals in the 28th and 39th minutes, the Lady Flames’ second and third goals of the day.
On Sunday against top-ranked UNC, Hamlett tallied a goal and an assist. The senior scored at the 9:53 mark, her eighth goal of the year, to trim the Tar Heels’ lead in half (2-1). Hamlett also assisted on freshman Pima Iturraspe’s fourth quarter goal. Through 11 games this year, Hamlett ranks second on the team in goals (4), tied for second in points (20) and fifth in assists (4). She is currently 24th nationally in points per game (1.82) and 28th in goals per game (0.73).
Hamlett and the Liberty offense are first in the country in goals per game (4.45), assists per game (4.18) and points per game (13.09). The Lady Flames rank second in scoring average (4.39) and scoring margin (3.23).
Dykema totaled one goal, one assist and three points in two games last week. The senior defender from Newport News, Va. notched an assist, her eighth of the season, against Quinnipiac and helped Liberty record a 5-0 shutout. All seven of Liberty’s wins this year have come by shutout and the Lady Flames lead the country in shutouts per game (0.64). The Lady Flames’ seven shutouts are tied for the second most in a season in school history (record is eight, set in 2013).
On Sunday against the UNC Tar Heels, Dykema scored a goal in the fourth quarter, her sixth of the year, and made a defensive save in the contest. Through 11 games of her senior season, she is No. 2 on the squad in assists, tied for second in points (20) and fourth in goals (6).
Hamlett, Dykema and No. 16 Liberty (7-4, 3-0 BIG EAST) will be back in action on Friday versus Villanova (7-4, 1-2 BIG EAST). Game time is 3 p.m. at the Villanova Field Hockey Field in Conshohocken, Pa. The Lady Flames are in first place in the BIG EAST standings, a game ahead of No. 12 Connecticut (7-3, 2-1 BIG EAST), No. 13 Old Dominion (7-2, 2-1 BIG EAST), Temple (9-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) and Providence (5-6, 2-1 BIG EAST).
