BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship Details
The No. 1 seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Championship came down to a shootout, with host No. 14 Old Dominion edging No. 16 Liberty 1-0 (2-1 in the shootout), Friday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
With Temple defeating No. 11 Connecticut 3-2 to secure its spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, the result made it such that the winner of the Liberty-ODU match would earn the top seed for the championship. If UConn had defeated Temple, the Lady Flames would have been guaranteed the No. 1 seed as the game against the Monarchs headed to overtime due to goal differential in BIG EAST play.
ODU junior forward Marlon de Bruinje scored on the Monarchs' fourth attempt in the shootout to put the hosts ahead 2-1. Liberty's Charlotte Vaanhold took Liberty's fifth and final attempt, and her effort was saved by ODU netminder Cam MacGillivray to preserve the win.
Liberty (10-7) falls in BIG EAST regular season play for the first time in its last 17 conference matches. The Lady Flames finished 6-1 in the league and earned a share of the conference's regular season crown. Liberty will be the No. 2 seed for next weekend's BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship.
ODU improves to 14-2 on the year and has won nine straight games. The Monarchs also earned a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. ODU will be the No. 1 seed for the BIG EAST Tournament. The other two teams in the BIG EAST Championship will be No. 3 seed Connecticut (11-5, 5-2 BIG EAST) and No. 4 seed Temple (12-5, 4-3 BIG EAST).
