LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey's Josefina Tomasi and Diane Saint Martin were selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in the final weekly awards of the season handed out by the conference.
Tomasi's award is her fifth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition of the year. The junior finishes the regular season with the most weekly honors of any Lady Flame. It is her sixth career BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition. Meanwhile, Saint Martin earns her second BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod of her sophomore campaign.
Tomasi, a forward who hails from Cañada de Gómez, Argentina, scored her ninth goal of the year in Liberty's 2-1 road triumph at Villanova, last Friday afternoon in the regular season finale. With the Lady Flames trailing 1-0 early in the third quarter, Tomasi's beautiful reverse shot into the top left corner of the cage evened the game at 1-1 at the 33:45 mark.
Tomasi's nine goals in 17 games are tied for second most on the squad and tied for fifth most in the BIG EAST Conference. She ranks second on the team in points with 22.
Saint Martin had a standout regular season finale against the Wildcats, making four saves in the victory. The sophomore goalkeeper made one save in each period, with her biggest stop coming early in the first quarter on a Wildcats penalty stroke attempt from Adie Minnella in the fourth minute.
Villanova scored later in the first quarter, and without that first stop from Saint Martin, the Wildcats would have led 2-0. Saint Martin also made a crucial save in the fourth quarter in the 56th minute with the home side pulling its goalkeeper for an extra attacker. In 17 starts this season, Saint Martin sports a 12-5 record, 1.50 goals-against average, 45 saves and four shutouts.
Liberty earned 18 BIG EAST weekly awards in 10 regular season weeks this fall.
Tomasi, Saint Martin and No. 13 Liberty (12-5, 5-1 BIG EAST) are the No. 2 seed for this weekend's BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The Lady Flames will take on No. 3 seed Old Dominion (13-4, 3-3 BIG EAST) in the semifinal round, Friday at 4 p.m. at Temple's Howarth Field in Philadelphia. Pa.
