
Vaanhold and Iritxity Irigoyen Selected to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Liberty field hockey’s Charlotte Vaanhold and Azul Iritxity Irigoyen were recognized for their performances last weekend in being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
This is Vaanhold’s first time being named to the honor roll. Meanwhile, Iritxity Irigoyen, an eight-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, is being tabbed to the honor roll for the second time in her career.
Vaanhold led Liberty with a game-high two goals in a 5-0 win over Villanova last Friday in BIG EAST play, helping the Lady Flames stay atop the league standings with a 4-0 record. The senior forward scored Liberty’s third and fourth goals of the afternoon at the 22:30 and 29:26 marks, both in the second quarter. Her first goal came on a feed from freshman Pima Iturraspe in the 23rd minute.
Vaanhold scored on a rebound with 34.9 seconds remaining in the opening half for a 4-0 lead. The second goal was her eighth of the season. Through 13 games in 2022, the Hollandsche Rading, Netherlands native is tied for second on the squad with eight goals and ranks fourth in points with 18. Vaanhold has 37 career goals, tied for sixth most in program history.
Iritxity Irigoyen, a junior goalkeeper, posted one shutout, nine saves and a 1.00 goals-against-average (GAA) in this past weekend’s pair of games. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native made one save in a shutout of the Wildcats, her sixth clean sheet of the year and the team’s eighth shutout of the year. The Lady Flames’ eight shutouts match a program record.
On Sunday versus the No. 7-ranked Louisville Cardinals, Iritxity Irigoyen tallied a season-high eight saves. Her eight-save effort was the most saves she has recorded in a game since totaling nine against No. 5 Maryland in last year’s NCAA Final Four (3-2 double OT win on Nov. 19, 2021). In 13 starts this season, she is 8-5 with a 1.21 GAA, 31 saves, six shutouts and a .674 save percentage. Liberty is No. 2 nationally in shutouts per game (0.62). Iritxity Irigoyen is up to 15 career shutouts, only one behind program record holder Allison Schaefer (16 shutouts, 2016-19).
Vaanhold, Iritxity Irigoyen and No. 16 Liberty (8-5, 4-0 BIG EAST) will host Temple (10-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) in BIG EAST action, Friday at 4 p.m. Friday is Senior Day for the Liberty field hockey program. Prior to the match, the team will honor its six seniors with a special ceremony.
